Philippines Earthquake Today: Earthquake of 6.3 Magnitude Strikes Near Sarangani Island – Check Epicenter, Tsunami Warning, List of Affected Areas & More

A powerful earthquake of 6.3 magnitude happened near the coast of Sarangani island in the Philippines. It did not trigger any tsunami warnings or cause casualties and structural damages.

This evening, a powerful earthquake of 6.3 magnitude happened near the coast of Sarangani island in the Philippines. However, local authorities have reassured that all is well. The Philippines experiences earthquakes frequently due to its strategic location on the Pacific Ring of Fire.

Philippines Earthquake Today: What Happened in Sarangani Island? 

Today, a powerful earthquake of 6.3 magnitude struck southwest of Sarangi Island in Southwestern Philippines. The news was initially reported by the United States Geological Survey. 

According to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, the earthquake happened at a depth of 62 kilometres. While the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported the earthquake’s depth as 10 kilometres. No casualties, injuries or major structural damage has been reported so far.  

Philippines Earthquake Today: Cause of Earthquake 

An official cause of the earthquake has not been shared. But seismologists believe that it was likely triggered by tectonic activity driven by the subduction zones around the Philippine Mobile Belt. 

The Philippines is very earthquake prone  due to its sensitive location on the Pacific Ring of Fire. As a result, it is subject to constant monitoring from seismologists. The tectonic belt (Pacific Ring of Fire) also includes some other countries from the Asia Pacific like Japan and Taiwan.

Philippines Earthquake Today: Epicenter of Earthquake 

The earthquake;s epicenter was 37 kilometres southwest of Balut Island in the municipality of Sarangani. Seismological experts have specified 03.10°N, 125.65°E  as the coordinates of the epicetre. 

Philippines Earthquake Today: Tsunami Warning

No tsunami warning was issued due to the earthquake. The Tsunami Information Bulletin No. 1, PHIVOLCS clearly states that: “No destructive tsunami threat exists based on available data. This is for information purposes only and there is no tsunami threat to the Philippines from this earthquake.”
