Portugal General Strike Latest Update: Travellers heading to Portugal are facing significant disruptions today as a nationwide general strike has affected flights, trains, metro services, schools and public services across the country. The 24-hour strike, organised by Portugal’s largest trade union confederation, CGTP, has led to widespread transport delays and hundreds of flight cancellations at major airports.

The strike is being held in protest against proposed labour law reforms that unions claim would weaken worker protections, make dismissals easier and expand outsourcing practices. The action has impacted several sectors, with aviation and public transportation among the worst affected.

General Strike in Portugal: Hundreds of Flights Cancelled Across Portugal

Air travel has been hit particularly hard, with airports reporting cancellations and delays throughout the day. Portugal’s national carrier, TAP Air Portugal, has drastically reduced its schedule and is operating only a limited number of flights under minimum service requirements.

According to reports, more than 500 flights were either cancelled or placed at risk of disruption as cabin crew, airport workers, and ground handling staff joined the strike action. TAP confirmed that only 79 flights would operate while the remainder of its daily schedule was cancelled.

Ricardo Penarróias, president of a cabin crew union representing flight attendants at TAP Air Portugal, said 500 flights were at risk of being cancelled and delayed.

Portugal General Strike Latest Update: Lisbon, Porto and Faro Airports Among Worst Affected

The disruption has impacted Portugal’s busiest airports, including:

  • Lisbon Humberto Delgado Airport
  • Porto Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport
  • Faro Airport
  • Madeira Airport in Funchal
  • João Paulo II Airport in Ponta Delgada, Azores

Lisbon Airport is experiencing the highest number of cancellations, while Porto and Faro are also reporting significant disruptions. Travellers have been advised to check flight status before heading to the airport and allow additional time for their journey.

General Strike in Portugal: Which Airlines Are Affected?

TAP Air Portugal has been the airline most heavily affected by the strike. The carrier is allowing eligible passengers to change their travel dates without extra charges and is offering alternative travel arrangements where possible.

Air Europa has cancelled all flights operating between Madrid and the Portuguese cities of Lisbon and Porto.

Union representatives warned that flights operated by easyJet and Ryanair could also face disruption. However, Ryanair has stated that it expects to operate normally despite the strike. EasyJet has acknowledged the possibility of disruptions and said affected passengers will be informed directly.

Portugal General Strike Latest Update: Public Transport Services Also Disrupted

The strike extends beyond airports and aviation. Rail services, metro systems and urban transport networks have also been severely affected.

Most long-distance and regional train services have been suspended, while the Lisbon Metro has faced major shutdowns. Public transport workers in Lisbon and Porto joined the nationwide action, creating additional challenges for passengers trying to reach airports and city centres.

General Strike in Portugal: Why Are Workers on Strike?

The strike was called by CGTP in opposition to the government’s proposed labour reform package. Trade unions argue that the changes would make it easier for companies to dismiss employees, increase outsourcing opportunities and weaken existing worker protections.

The reforms reportedly include amendments to more than 100 labour code provisions. Union leaders have described the proposals as a threat to employment security and workers’ rights.

Portugal General Strike Latest Update: Travellers Advised to Expect Delays Beyond June 3

Travel experts have warned that disruptions may continue even after the strike officially ends. Airlines often require time to reposition aircraft and crews following mass cancellations, meaning some delays and schedule changes could continue over the next few days.

Passengers travelling through Portugal this week are advised to:

  • Check flight status regularly with your airline.
  • Arrive at airports earlier than usual.
  • Confirm transport arrangements before travelling.
  • Monitor airline notifications for schedule changes.
  • Keep travel insurance details readily available.
  • Entry and Border Delays Add Further Pressure

The latest strike comes at a time when European airports are already dealing with delays linked to the European Union’s Entry/Exit System (EES). The biometric border control system has increased processing times at several airports across Europe, creating longer queues for international travellers.

With airport staffing levels reduced because of the strike, passengers could experience even longer waiting times at border control checkpoints.

Portugal General Strike Latest Update: Latest Situation

Authorities continue to monitor the nationwide strike as airports, transport operators and airlines work to minimise disruption. Travellers with flights to or from Portugal are being urged to stay in close contact with their airline and check for real-time updates before travelling.
