Russia has openly backed Iran during its escalating confrontation with the United States, signalling strong political support for Tehran at a critical moment in the region. Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday reaffirmed that Moscow would continue to stand with Iran despite rising global tensions.
Putin also congratulated Mojtaba Khamenei, who has taken over as Iran’s new leader following the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The Russian leader’s message came as Israel warned it would continue to target Iran’s leadership and pursue Khamenei’s successor.

Russia and Iran have strengthened their political and military cooperation over the past decade. Both countries share opposition to US influence in the region and often coordinate on key international issues.

Putin emphasised that Russia’s position remains firm.
He said Russia would continue to support Iran and maintain solidarity with the country during the ongoing crisis.
"I wish to confirm unwavering support for Tehran and solidarity with our Iranian friends," Putin said.
Putin also sent a message congratulating Mojtaba Khamenei on assuming leadership of Iran. The Russian president expressed confidence that the new leader would guide the country through the current crisis.
Congratulating Mojtoba Khamenei, Putin said he was confident Khamenei would continue his father's work "with honour" and unite the Iranian people “in the face of severe trials.”
The message underlined Moscow’s willingness to work closely with Iran’s new leadership during a period of instability.
The leadership transition in Iran comes at a time of rising tensions with Israel. Israeli authorities have warned that they may continue to target Iran’s leadership as part of their broader security strategy.
This warning has increased concerns about further escalation in the region, particularly as Iran and Israel remain locked in a cycle of retaliation.
Analysts believe leadership changes in Iran could reshape the country’s political direction while also affecting its approach to the ongoing conflict.
Before sending his congratulatory message, Putin spoke with Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi following the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader.
Earlier, in a phone call late on Friday with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, Putin expressed his deep condolences over the killing of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, members of Khamenei's family, Iranian political and military leaders, and "numerous civilians".
The call highlighted the close diplomatic coordination between Moscow and Tehran during the current crisis.
Russia’s strong backing of Iran could further complicate the geopolitical situation in the Middle East. With the United States supporting Israel and Russia standing by Iran, analysts warn that the conflict could deepen global divisions.
For now, Moscow has made its stance clear, it intends to maintain close ties with Tehran and support the country during what Putin described as a difficult period.
"At a time when Iran is confronting armed aggression, your tenure in this high position will undoubtedly require great courage and dedication," the Russian leader said.
