Russia-Europe tensions: UK sends carrier strike group to Greenland amid Moscow’s military buildup, Keir Starmer warns of long-term European security risks.
Russia-Europe Tensions: The UK government has announced a major naval deployment amid rising tensions with Russia. Prime Minister Keir Starmer said Britain will send a carrier strike group to the North Atlantic and High North, citing growing concerns over Moscow’s military buildup.
The Prince of Wales aircraft carrier will lead the deployment operation, which Starmer announced together with US and Canadian military forces, who will work under NATO command. Russian forces continue to rebuild their military capabilities because the ongoing war in Ukraine makes this situation necessary, according to military experts.
Greenland serves as an autonomous Danish territory that controls Arctic security while protecting North Atlantic defense routes. British naval forces operate near Greenland to create a deterrent effect while supporting NATO's northern defense operations.
Starmer asserted that Russia will continue to pose a security threat to Ukraine even after the two sides reach a peace agreement. He said that Moscow had started to rebuild its military forces together with its industrial resources, which will enable their future military operations against NATO.
Western leaders believe that Russia plans to pursue its strategic objectives after Ukraine, since there is no evidence of an upcoming attack. Western leaders consider that Russia plans to conducta full-scale European invasion which will lead to hybrid threats and cyberattacks, together with limited regional provocations.
Starmer delivered his speech to denounce extreme political positions that he sees as dangerous to UK national security through their positions toward Russia and NATO. He called on people to support stronger defense measures while explaining that Europe faces a threat because people become too self-assured about European stability.
