Russia Ukraine War Latest News: Poland has warned of a possible widening of the Russia-Ukraine war after Russian strikes hit targets close to the Polish border. The latest incident involved a Kyiv-Warsaw passenger train that was struck in western Ukraine, around 2 kilometres from Polish territory. The attack has raised fresh security concerns in Poland, a NATO member, as Russian strikes increasingly reach areas close to the alliance’s eastern flank.

Russia Ukraine War Latest News: Could Russian Escalation Reach Poland?

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk chaired an emergency meeting in Warsaw following the latest attacks. He warned that Russia could intensify its military campaign in the coming weeks and said the possibility of the conflict affecting Polish territory could not be completely ruled out. “We cannot exclude that the escalation will also affect our territory … I hope not,” Tusk said. His remarks reflect growing concerns in Warsaw that continued Russian attacks in western Ukraine could bring the war closer to Poland and other NATO countries.

Russia Ukraine War Latest News: How Close Was The Strike To Poland?

The Kyiv-Warsaw passenger train was hit near Yahodyn in Ukraine’s Volyn region, approximately 2 kilometres from the Polish border. The locomotive was damaged, but no passengers or railway workers were reported injured. Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski said the strike occurred only a few hundred metres from the Polish border and warned that the incident directly affected Poland’s security.

“This was just a few hundred metres from the Polish border, this affects the safety of my countrymen,” Sikorski said in Kyiv, calling on allies to “double” their support for Ukraine. The location of the strike is particularly significant because Poland is a NATO member and has repeatedly warned about the risks posed by Russia’s war against Ukraine spreading closer to its territory.

Russia Ukraine War Latest News: Were Boris Johnson And David Petraeus Near The Strike?

The incident also drew attention because several prominent Western figures were in the area shortly before or during the attack.cFormer British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and other European officials were travelling on a diplomatic train towards Poland. Former CIA Director David Petraeus was also at Yahodyn station when the attack occurred.

However, there is no independent confirmation that Johnson, Petraeus or any other Western official was specifically targeted. Ukrainian authorities have described the strike as deliberate, while Ukrainian Railways raised the possibility that the diplomatic train may have been the intended target. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also condemned the attack. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha described the incident as “Putin’s terror knocking directly on the doors of the EU and Nato”.

Russia Ukraine War Latest News: Why Is Poland On Alert?

The latest strike comes amid continued Russian attacks across Ukraine and growing concern over incidents near NATO territory.cPoland has remained one of Ukraine’s strongest supporters since Russia launched its full-scale invasion. Warsaw has also increased its military preparedness because of its proximity to the conflict.cThe latest warning does not mean that Russia has attacked Poland or that an attack on Polish territory is imminent. Instead, Tusk’s comments highlight the risk that further escalation could bring the conflict closer to NATO’s borders.

Russia Ukraine War Latest News: What Did Trump Say About Ukraine’s Attacks?

Separately, US President Donald Trump has urged Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to stop attacks on Russian oil refineries and fuel infrastructure. “Mr. Zelenskyy has to do one thing, he has to stop knocking out diesel fuel in Russia,” Trump told reporters in Ireland.

Trump has argued that Ukrainian strikes on Russian energy infrastructure are contributing to pressure on fuel supplies. Kyiv, however, maintains that Russia’s oil industry supports Moscow’s military campaign and is therefore a legitimate target in the war. The attacks have also disrupted Russia’s refining capacity and added pressure to regional and global fuel markets.

Russia Ukraine War Latest News: What Happens Next?

The latest developments underline the growing security risks surrounding the Russia-Ukraine war, particularly for countries on NATO’s eastern flank. For Poland, the immediate concern is preventing the conflict from spilling across its border. While there has been no reported direct Russian attack on Polish territory in this incident, Tusk’s warning shows that Warsaw is preparing for the possibility of further escalation as Russian strikes continue near the border.
