This morning, Russian missiles launched a deadly attack on Kyiv, while the country’s leader Volodymyr Zelensky spoke to multiple leaders at the recently concluded G7 summit in France. According to reports, the Kremlin fired ballistic missiles over the Ukrainian capital.
“The enemy is attacking the capital with ballistic missiles. Stay in safe places until the air raid alert is over!” Tymur Tkachenko, the head of Kyiv’s military administration, claimed in a concerning telegram post. Details of the attack, such as affected infrastructure or casualty count have not been shared yet.
However, the Ukrainian army retaliated by attacking Moscow. As a result, a high-rise residential building, an industrial facility and a number of private houses all suffered heavy damage. Flights at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo airport were temporarily suspended but then later resumed.
The city’s mayor, Sergei Sobyanin, said on Telegram “Air defense forces continue to repel a massive attack. Several drones managed to reach the Moscow oil refinery”.

Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky recently attended the G7 summit in Evian-Les-Bains, France. While there, he held bilateral meetings with multiple state heads, including US President Donald Trump, India’s Narendra Modi, France’s Emmanuel Macron and others. His main motive was to start a dialogue on initiating peace talks with Russia.

Earlier this week, Russia attacked the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra monastery, a spiritual and cultural landmark of Ukraine’s capital Kyiv, which led to 4 casualties and 23 people getting injured. And today, it launched multiple ballistic missiles on the city.
So why is Russia targeting Kyiv? Some suggest that the Kremlin wishes to weaken the city’s defenses and retaliate for the recent attacks on Moscow. Others believe that Russia could later on use this as a form of political leverage during any potential peace talks.

Multiple leaders, including Belarus’ Alexander Lukashenko & the US’ Donald Trump have suggested that both Russia and Ukraine have lost many men in the war, with casualty reports slightly higher on the former’s side. Now, some geopolitical experts have suggested that the war, now in its fifth year, could end due to lack of troops rather than mediation efforts.

Zelensky met with Donald Trump on the sidelines of the G7 summit in France. There, the American president expressed dissatisfaction with how long the war had been dragged out and once again offered to play peacemaker.
“I settled eight wars,” he said. “This was the one I told you was going to be the easiest to settle, but they just, there’s a lot of dislike between the two leaders.”, he boasted proudly.
But after that, he also admitted that it doesn’t affect his country. “We have nothing to do with it,” he said. “We sell weapons to them. … The European Union pays us full price for weapons. … This has no impact on us other than we sell weapons. We’re thousands of miles away”.
But with his recent announcement that US envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff will be headed to Eastern Europe soon, it seems highly likely that Trump’s country could be the one to finally open potential peace talks between Russia and Ukraine.
