Russia-Ukraine War Latest News: Ukraine on Sunday accused Russia of carrying out a drone strike on a storage facility containing spent nuclear fuel near the defunct Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, escalating fresh concerns over nuclear safety amid the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war.

According to Ukrainian authorities, the facility targeted in the alleged attack is located approximately nine miles from the Chernobyl plant. While the strike raised alarm over the security of nuclear infrastructure, officials confirmed that there was no disruption to radiation levels following the incident. Russia has not officially commented on or confirmed the reported drone attack.

Ukraine Accuses Russia of Endangering Nuclear Facilities

Reacting to the incident, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha strongly condemned Moscow, describing what he called a pattern of threats to nuclear security during the conflict.

Taking to X, Sybiha wrote, “This is not the first time Russian forces are putting Ukrainian nuclear facilities at risk.”

He further added, “Russia’s nuclear blackmail and threats to nuclear safety are systemic, deliberate, and unacceptable.” The latest accusation comes as concerns continue to surround the safety of nuclear sites in Ukraine, particularly during military operations near sensitive infrastructure.

Nuclear Safety Remains a Major Concern in Russia-Ukraine War

Since the start of the war, both Russia and Ukraine have repeatedly accused each other of attacks around the Russian-controlled Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant in southeastern Ukraine, the largest nuclear power facility in Europe.

International observers and nuclear safety experts have repeatedly warned that military activity around nuclear installations could increase the risk of a major accident.

The reported drone strike near Chernobyl has once again highlighted fears over the vulnerability of Ukraine’s nuclear infrastructure as the conflict continues.

Zelensky Calls for Direct Talks With Putin

The latest development comes just days after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky proposed direct face-to-face negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin in an effort to revive stalled peace talks and end the war.

In an open letter published on the Ukrainian presidency’s website on Thursday, Zelensky urged the Russian leader to engage directly.

“Ukraine proposes ending this war through direct engagement between you and us. I am proposing a meeting,” Zelensky wrote.

He also stated that Ukraine would be prepared to implement a full ceasefire for the duration of negotiations and suggested an all-for-all prisoner exchange as an initial confidence-building measure.

Zelensky described the exchange of prisoners of war as a potential “good prologue to ending the war.”

Putin Rejects Proposal for Immediate Meeting

Speaking at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum on Thursday, Putin dismissed the idea of an immediate meeting with Zelensky, arguing that meaningful talks could only take place after negotiators had prepared a framework for an agreement.

“I see no point in meeting. It only makes sense for the Ukrainian side to stop the advance of our armed forces. That’s it. And we need agreements,” Putin said.

“Let the experts work, develop some solutions, and then we can meet,” he added. The exchange underscores the continuing gap between Moscow and Kyiv as diplomatic efforts to end the more than four-year-long conflict remain stalled.

Russia-Ukraine War: Latest Tensions Around Nuclear Security

The alleged drone strike near the Chernobyl spent nuclear fuel storage facility has renewed international attention on nuclear safety risks in Ukraine. While no radiation leak has been reported, Ukrainian officials argue that attacks near nuclear infrastructure pose a serious threat and require global scrutiny. As the Russia-Ukraine war continues, tensions over nuclear facilities, battlefield developments, and stalled peace negotiations remain key issues shaping the conflict.
