Russia-Ukraine War Latest News: Context of Overnight Assaults

The devastation in Balakliia and Sumy follows major bombardments earlier in the week, including a massive assault on the Kyiv region that killed 17 people. According to reports, Ukrainian forces have recently been unable to down incoming ballistic missiles in several key sectors due to a severe depletion of Patriot missile stockpiles.

The civilian deaths in Balakliia highlighted Russia’s continued deployment of sequential drone strikes. A secondary drone hit the same residential area shortly after the first, deliberately endangering residents and early first responders trying to clear initial debris.

Alongside the drone attacks, Russia has expanded its daily usage of guided aerial bombs (glide bombs). In regions like Zaporizhzhia and Kharkiv, regional authorities report these highly unpredictable weapons are being dropped four to six times a day, specifically targeting urban centers to sow panic.

Simultaneously, Ukraine has accelerated its long-range drone campaign targeting Russia’s economic infrastructure.

  • Refinery Attacks: President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that Ukrainian drones successfully struck two major Russian oil refineries located roughly 700 kilometres from the front lines in the Bashkortostan and Yaroslavl regions. The strategy aims to directly squeeze Moscow’s military oil revenues.

  • Logistics Hub Disruption: Ukrainian Unmanned Systems Forces have heavily targeted logistical nodes inside Russia, notably hitting 15 warehouses belonging to Wildberries—Russia’s largest e-commerce retailer—which Ukraine asserts are utilized to supply goods to the Russian military.

The tactical situation on the border is expected to shift further. Ukrainian military intelligence reported that Russia plans to deploy a newly assigned North Korean missile unit to the western Voronezh region.

The deployment is rumored to include six specialized launchers and 120 North Korean-supplied short-range ballistic missiles, signaling deeper military cooperation between Moscow and Pyongyang.
