Russia Ukraine War Letest Update: Russian President Vladimir Putin on Saturday signalled that the long-running war in Ukraine could be moving toward a possible conclusion, marking one of his strongest public indications so far that Moscow may now be open to a negotiated phase after more than four years of intense conflict.

Speaking during Russia’s Victory Day events in Moscow, Putin said, “I think that the matter is coming to an end,” as Russia and Ukraine entered a three-day ceasefire that was proposed by US President Donald Trump. At the same time, both countries agreed to exchange 1,000 prisoners each in one of the biggest prisoner swaps since the war began.

Russia Ukraine War Letest Update: Putin’s Remarks Spark Fresh Focus on Russia-Ukraine Peace Talks

Putin’s comments immediately attracted international attention because the Kremlin has largely maintained a hardline military stance throughout the conflict. His latest statement has now fuelled speculation that diplomatic discussions may be gaining momentum behind closed doors.

“There is a feeling now that Moscow wants to signal that talks are no longer off the table,” one European diplomat reportedly said after Putin’s remarks. The latest ceasefire and prisoner exchange are being viewed as possible signs of renewed efforts to reduce tensions between the two countries.

Russia Ukraine War Letest Update: Russia Holds Scaled-Down Victory Day Parade in Moscow

This year’s Victory Day celebrations in Moscow looked noticeably different from previous years. Unlike earlier parades that showcased heavy military equipment through Red Square, no tanks appeared during the event. Instead, giant digital screens displayed advanced Russian missiles, drones and fighter aircraft.

Russian soldiers who had fought in Ukraine marched near the Kremlin walls during the ceremony, which took place under tight security. During his eight-minute speech, Putin praised Russian troops and accused NATO countries of supporting what he described as an “aggressive force” against Russia. Reports also stated that North Korean soldiers, who were allegedly involved alongside Russian troops in the Kursk region, participated in the parade.

Russia Ukraine War Letest Update: Putin Open to Talks With Europe Under Certain Conditions

The Russian President also spoke about the possibility of restoring communication with European leaders. When asked whether he was willing to engage with European governments again, Putin named former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder as his preferred contact.

“For me personally, the former Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany, Mr. Schroeder, is preferable,” Putin said. Putin was also questioned about a possible direct meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

In response, he said such talks would only happen if both sides first agreed on a long-term peace framework.

The Kremlin has repeatedly argued that European countries ended diplomatic engagement with Moscow after Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Russian officials have maintained that any future restoration of dialogue should begin from the Western side.

Russia Ukraine War Letest Update: Donald Trump Calls for Longer Russia-Ukraine Ceasefire

Meanwhile, Donald Trump called for extending the current ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine. Speaking to reporters in Washington, Trump said he hoped the temporary pause in fighting would become “a big extension”. “I’d like to see it stop. Russia-Ukraine — it’s the worst thing since World War Two in terms of life,” Trump said. Despite repeated accusations from both sides in recent days, there were no immediate reports of major ceasefire violations after the truce officially began.

Russia Ukraine War Letest Update: Ukraine War Remains Europe’s Deadliest Conflict Since World War II

The Russia-Ukraine war, which began after Moscow invaded Ukraine in February 2022, has become Europe’s deadliest conflict since World War II. Hundreds of thousands of people have reportedly been killed or injured during the fighting, while several Ukrainian cities have suffered massive destruction. The war has also severely damaged relations between Russia and Western countries, pushing tensions to levels often compared with the Cold War era.

Russia Ukraine War Letest Update: Zelenskyy Responds Carefully to Moscow Victory Day Celebrations

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reacted cautiously to Russia’s Victory Day parade and the latest developments surrounding the ceasefire. In a light remark, Zelenskyy said Ukraine would “allow” Russia’s military parade to continue and added that Ukrainian weapons would not target Red Square during the celebrations. His response came as diplomatic efforts and international discussions over a possible peace process continued to gain attention worldwide.
