Several people have been killed and injured in an explosion that struck the Shahr‑e‑Naw district of Kabul on Monday afternoon, officials said, raising fresh concerns about security in Afghanistan’s capital.
The blast occurred in an area known for housing foreigners and secure properties, making it particularly alarming for residents and officials alike.
Initial emergency responses showed smoke rising over the neighbourhood and injured people being rushed to nearby hospitals as authorities worked to secure the scene.
Taliban Interior Ministry spokesperson Abdul Mateen Qani confirmed the blast and told reporters that “According to preliminary reports, a number of people were killed and injured,” and added that more details will be released as the investigation progresses. Kabuli police spokesperson Khalid Zadran also acknowledged the explosion, saying it took place near a hotel on Gulfaroshi Street in the Shahr‑e‑Naw area and resulted in casualties.
Authorities have not yet confirmed what caused the explosion. Some local reports suggest the blast could have originated from inside a hotel or a nearby establishment, but official sources have yet to provide clarity. Security forces and investigators are on the ground, cordoning off the area, searching for evidence, and interviewing witnesses as part of the ongoing inquiry.
The Shahr‑e‑Naw district lies in the heart of Kabul and is typically considered one of the city’s more secure areas. It hosts hotels, businesses and residential buildings and is often frequented by foreigners and diplomats. A blast in this part of the capital is unusual and has heightened anxiety among residents and visitors.
