What Challenges Did SpaceX Face During the Previous Starship Test Flight?
The decision to halt Flight 13 comes after SpaceX faced several challenges during the 12th test flight on May 22. During that mission, differences in engine startup timing at the separation stage caused the booster’s directional flip manoeuvre to shift by approximately 90 degrees. The Super Heavy booster was expected to complete a sustained burn before making a controlled landing in the gulf. However, engine issues prevented that, causing the booster to return to Earth in a “hard splashdown,” according to SpaceX’s launch report. The Federal Aviation Administration said there were no reports of public injuries or damage to public property following the incident.
SpaceX later addressed the issues, saying in a blog post that “the startup sequence has been modified to be more robust to timing variability and more reliably flip in the desired direction, which is done to increase overall performance.” The company also made hardware and software improvements ahead of the next mission. “The Super Heavy on this upcoming flight has hardware modifications to improve re-light reliability along with updates to engine alarms and aborts to match the conditions seen in the multi-engine flight environment,” SpaceX said.
What Was Special About Starship Flight 13’s Planned Mission?
Starship Flight 13 was expected to introduce several important tests, including the first deployment of V3 Starlink satellites. SpaceX planned to use the mission to demonstrate how the upgraded spacecraft could support future communication capabilities. The test flight was scheduled to deploy 20 satellites equipped with solar arrays and antennas. These satellites were designed to connect with the broader Starlink network through high-capacity laser links while travelling on the same suborbital trajectory as Starship. The satellites were also designed to burn up during atmospheric reentry approximately 20 minutes after deployment.
