Spain Earthquake Today: What Happened in Andalusia?
During the early hours of Saturday, an earthquake of magnitude 5 hit the Andalusia region in Southern Spain, causing widespread property damage. According to seismologists, the quake happened at a shallow depth of roughly 10 kilometres.
It originally happened in the town of Alhendin shortly after 1 AM local time, as reported by Reuters originally. There have been no reports of casualties or injuries yet.
Spain Earthquake Today: Cause of Earthquake
An official cause of the earthquake has not been shared. But seismologists believe that the continuous tectonic collision between the African and Eurasian plates might have triggered the earthquake.
Southern Spain is considered to be highly earthquake-prone as it sits right on the intersection of the African and Eurasian tectonic plates. As a result, it is subject to constant monitoring from seismologists.
Spain Earthquake Today: Epicentre of Earthquake
According to the National Geographic Institute , the earthquake’s epicentre was located 9 to 10 kilometres southwest of downtown Granada in the Alhendin municipality. Estimates suggest that the point of origin is exactly between Alhendin & its neighbouring town of Las Gabias.

Spain Earthquake Today: Resident Advisory
Antonio Sanz Cabello, vice-president of the Andalusian regional government, said in a post on X on Saturday that authorities had declared a state of emergency. “If you’re in Granada, you’ve felt the earthquake, you’re okay, and your home shows no damage, stay calm and avoid entering and exiting buildings unnecessarily,”
Local authorities have also released an advisory for residents in the region. “On the street, stay away from facades, cornices, balconies, walls, and other elements that could fall.”, it stated.
