The image shows Stephen Hawking smiling while seated between two women wearing bikinis. It was taken in 2006 at a hotel in St Thomas in the US Virgin Islands. At the time, Hawking was attending a science conference that was sponsored by, or connected to, events involving Epstein’s professional network.
After the photograph began circulating on social media, it triggered online rumours and misinterpretations, prompting Hawking’s family to step in and clarify the facts.

A spokesperson for the Hawking family explained that the two women in the photograph were not strangers. They were his long-term carers from the United Kingdom and had no link to any illegal or inappropriate activity.
The family also stressed that Hawking lived with motor neurone disease, also known as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), for more than five decades. The condition left him paralysed and completely dependent on full-time medical support, including carers, a ventilator, a voice synthesiser and a wheelchair.
“Professor Hawking made some of the greatest contributions to physics in the 20th century while at the same time being the longest-known survivor of motor neurone disease, a debilitating condition which left him reliant on a ventilator, voice synthesiser, wheelchair and round-the-clock medical care. Any insinuation of inappropriate conduct on his part is wrong and far-fetched in the extreme,” the family said.
