BNP Thanks PM Narendra Modi for Election Greetings
The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) on Saturday thanked Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for sending congratulations to the party’s chairman, Tarique Rahman, after the party’s landslide victory in the parliamentary polls in Bangladesh.
The Bangladesh Nationalist Party said it appreciated the message sent by the Indian Prime Minister, as it reflected the leadership of the party’s chairman, Tarique Rahman, and the verdict of the electorate
In a statement posted on social media platform X, the BNP claimed that “the results of the election were a reflection of the confidence reposed by the people of Bangladesh in the leadership of our party and in democracy itself.”
It claimed, “It was a message given by the people in favor of change, and we reaffirm our commitment to democracy. Inclusive governance and development will always be central to our political agenda.”
Moreover, the BNP also stated that Bangladesh would continue to follow democratic values, as well as promote inclusive and progressive development for all Bangladeshi citizens. The BNP also highlighted that the election results only made their responsibility of governing transparently and accountably even higher.
Nevertheless, the BNP emphasized its commitment to the continuation of stable and cordial relations with India. The party stated that it was keen on having constructive relations with India, with the relationship being characterized by respect for each other, consideration for each other’s interests, and the quest for peace and stability in the region.

BNP’s response was prompted by Prime Minister Modi’s message congratulating Tarique Rahman on his party’s comprehensive victory in the parliamentary polls.
In the message, Modi stated that the outcome of the polls was an indication that the Bangladeshi people had confidence in Tarique’s leadership.
He also stated that India was committed to the continuation of its support for the democratic, inclusive, and progressive Bangladesh and that he was ready to work with the new leadership in the country in order to further enhance the relationship between the two countries.
According to unofficial results announced by the local media, the alliance led by the BNP clinched 210 seats in the 13th parliamentary election in Bangladesh. The impressive results paved the way for the formation of a new government with the leadership of the BNP.
According to the Bangladeshi newspaper Jugantor, Tarique Rahman was all set to become the Prime Minister, marking the return of the male Prime Minister in the country after nearly 35 years.
Unofficial results indicated that Tarique Rahman won the Dhaka-17 seat with 72,699 votes, beating the Jamaat-e-Islami candidate SM Khaliduzzaman, who secured 68,300 votes in the election. The election officials confirmed that the voting took place at 125 centers, including postal ballots, and that Tarique Rahman won the seat by 4,399 votes.
Tarique Rahman also won the Bogra-6 seat, where he secured 2,16,284 votes, while his nearest rival, Abidur Rahman Sohel, secured 97,626 votes.
Earlier in the day, after casting his vote at the Gulshan Model High School and College Centre in Dhaka, Rahman said the people of Bangladesh had been waiting for change for more than a decade.
The son of former President Gen Ziaur Rahman and late Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, Tarique Rahman assumed leadership of the BNP following his mother’s death in December last year. With the party’s sweeping electoral victory, he is now poised to lead the country.
