Tennessee is all set to have a high profile primary election. This year’s primary will include races for the gubernatorial election, all 9 Congressional districts, a US Senate election and 16 seats in the Tennessee state senate.

It’s primary election day in Tennessee, a prominent state in the Southeastern region of the US. This year’s primary will include races for the gubernatorial election, all 9 Congressional districts, a high profile Senate election and 16 seats in the Tennessee state senate.   

Tennessee Primary Election 2026: Election Date 

The primary election in Tennessee will be held on August 6, 2026. The southeastern state, nicknamed ‘The Volunteer State’ follows a top two primary system, where the top two candidates will end up advancing to the general election on November 3, 2026, irrespective of their political party. 

The election is being watched keenly as it’s the first one since the congressional map was controversially revised last year. Tennessee, like its neighbouring states, is often considered to be a Republican bastion, with very few left leaning leaders on neither state nor national leaders. The state will also elect a new governor for the first time in 8 years, as incumbent Bill Lee is term limited. 

Tennessee Primary Election 2026: Polling Hours 

In Tennessee, the primary election will be held via ballots and also physical voting centers. The centers will remain open from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM local time (EDT and CDT) on August 4, 2026. However, the state follows both Eastern and Central time zones, there might be some regional variance with regards to the time. 

Ballot  drop boxes will remain open throughout the day. And voters who opt for mail in ballots must ensure that their ballots are postmarked by August 6 for processing.  

Tennessee Primary Election 2026: Important Races 

Governor Election Race 

Incumbent Tennessee governor Bill Lee is ineligible to run again, due to term limitations. This means that a new governor will represent the volunteer state after 8 years.  

8 candidates have thrown their names into the ring with the GOP side including U.S. Senator Marsha Blackburn, U.S. Representative John Rose ad conservative State Representative Monty Fritts. A noteworthy factor is that President Trump has not endorsed anyone.  While the Democrat guerntorial primary includes 5 candidates. Tennessee has not elected a Democrat governor since 2006. 

US Senate Race 

Incumbent Republican Senator Bill Hagerty is running for re-election unopposed. However, the Democratic primary features 5 hopeful challengers including activist Marrquita Bradshaw, former director of party affairs for the Tennessee state branch Maria Brewer,  businesswoman Diana Onyejiaka, pastor Kevin Lee McCants and teacher Civil Miller Watkins. 

US House of Representatives 

Tennessee has 9 seats in the US House of Representatives and there will be polling for all of them. The 6th Congressional district will have an open race, as incumbent Democrat John Rose retired before the primary, while the 5th Congressional district will feature an exciting clash between incumbent Andy Ogles and Charlie Hatcher on the Republican side.  

Tennessee State Legislature 

Polls will be open for all 99 seats in the Tennessee House of Representatives and 16 odd-numbered seats in the Tennessee State Senate

Tennessee Primary Election Results 2026: Result Date 

The unofficial live results of Tennessee’s primary election will start showing shortly after 8 PM local time (EDT/CDT) on August 4, 2026. Then all counties will continue the vote counting process till late August, after which the results will be certified.  

Tennessee Primary Election 2026: ID Requirements 

In order to cast their vote, Tennessee voters should have some valid photo ID like a driver’s license in Tennessee, a US passport, a US military photo ID or photo ID issued by the Tennessee state government.
