Tropical Storm Jangmi Live Update: Japan remains on high alert as Tropical Storm Jangmi continues to move toward the Tokyo metropolitan area, bringing torrential rainfall, flooding concerns and major transport disruptions across several regions. Authorities have urged residents in vulnerable areas to stay vigilant as rivers rise and severe weather conditions continue to impact daily life.

The storm has already left thousands of households without electricity, forced airlines to cancel hundreds of flights and prompted evacuation advisories for hundreds of thousands of people.

Where is Storm Jangmi Now?

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), Storm Jangmi is moving northeast along Japan’s main island of Honshu and heading toward the greater Tokyo region.

Although the system weakened after making landfall and was downgraded from a typhoon to a tropical storm, meteorologists continue to warn of dangerous rainfall, flash flooding and landslide risks.

The JMA said the storm was carrying maximum sustained winds of up to 25 metres per second and warned that some coastal and low-lying areas face an increasing threat of severe flooding.

Tropical Storm Jangmi: More Than 370,000 Residents Advised to Evacuate

Local governments across several prefectures have issued evacuation advisories as weather conditions deteriorate. Authorities said approximately 370,000 residents stretching from Shikoku in western Japan to areas closer to Tokyo have been urged to move to safer locations.

Emergency officials emphasised the importance of acting quickly if conditions worsen. “If you sense any danger, please do not hesitate to take early action to protect your lives.”

The advisory comes as rivers continue to swell following hours of intense rainfall.

Tropical Storm Jangmi: Flood Warnings Issued Across Multiple Regions

Heavy rainfall has significantly increased flood risks in both western and eastern Japan. Several rivers have risen rapidly, prompting officials to issue flood warnings in populated areas, including Aichi Prefecture and parts of Tokyo.

Authorities later upgraded warnings in some regions to the highest alert level, urging residents near rivers and flood-prone zones to seek higher ground immediately. Television footage showed waterways nearing dangerous levels as emergency teams monitored conditions closely.

Power Outages Affect Thousands of Homes

The storm has also caused widespread power disruptions. Government officials reported that nearly 60,000 households lost electricity as strong winds and heavy rainfall damaged local infrastructure.

Emergency crews continue restoration efforts, though additional weather-related disruptions remain possible as the storm progresses toward eastern Japan.

Severe weather has significantly disrupted air travel. Major carriers, including Japan Airlines and All Nippon Airways, cancelled nearly 900 domestic and international flights as safety concerns mounted.

All scheduled departures from Tokyo’s Haneda Airport before noon were suspended, while dozens of international services were also affected. Passengers have been advised to check directly with airlines for updated schedules and travel information.

Tropical Storm Jangmi: Train Services Face Delays and Suspensions

Japan’s rail network has also experienced major disruptions. Several local train lines around Tokyo were suspended, while bullet train services in parts of western Japan and Kyushu reported delays.

Rail operators warned that additional cancellations and schedule changes could occur depending on weather conditions throughout the day. Travellers have been encouraged to monitor official railway updates before starting their journeys.

Tropical Storm Jangmi: What Happens Next?

Forecasters expect additional rainfall in several areas, including the Tokyo region, over the next 24 hours. Some locations have already recorded nearly 50 centimetres of rainfall, with further precipitation expected before conditions begin to improve.

Authorities continue to monitor river levels, flood risks and transportation networks while urging residents to follow evacuation guidance and stay updated through official weather alerts. As Storm Jangmi moves closer to Tokyo, emergency services remain prepared for potential flooding, infrastructure damage and further travel disruptions.
