The Department of Justice has released a settlement that permanently blocks the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) from pursuing tax claims involving US President Donald Trump and his family. The document, signed by Attorney General Todd Blanche, states that the federal government cannot pursue audit Trump’s tax returns filed before the settlement date on any matters that were raised or could have been raised.

What Does the New Agreement Clause Say?

The Department of Justice has barred the government from pursuing tax examinations against Donald Trump, his family, trusts, and affiliates. The one-page document, published by the Justice Department on Tuesday, permanently protects the President and his organization from outstanding tax liabilities. As per the new clause, the IRS has been barred from pursuing any active tax matters connected to President Trump and his businesses.

Trump Agrees to Drop $10 Billion Lawsuit Against IRS

Reports claimed that Donald Trump has agreed to dismiss his $10 billion lawsuit against the IRS which he filed over the unlawful leak of his tax records. In exchange for dropping the lawsuit, the Department has created a $1.8 billion fund to compensate his allies or groups who claim they were targeted for prosecution or investigation for political reasons by previous administrations. However, the Justice Department clarified the fresh clause only insulates past tax returns and active audits and it does not prevent the IRS from reviewing or auditing Trump’s future tax filings.

New Clause Sparks Outrage

The fresh settlement has been criticized by lawmakers who accused the administration of shielding the US President and has turned the federal government into his personal protection. Rep. Richard Neal, the top Democrat on the House Ways and Means Committee, heavily criticized the move. “Trump has turned the federal government into his personal protection racket by making sure his, his family, and his companies’ taxes are permanently off limits,” Neal was quoted as saying by CNN. However, the spokesperson along with Associate Attorney General Stanley Woodward, defended the agreement as a standard legal resolution. “As is customary in settlements, both sides have executed waivers of a variety of claims that were or could have been brought,” a spokesperson Natalie Baldassarre has stated.
