US President Donald Trump on Tuesday shared a map of the United States that showed Canada, Venezuela, and Greenland as part of US territory. The image was posted on his social media platform Truth Social and appeared to be created using artificial intelligence. The post quickly drew attention as it came at a time of growing tension between Trump and several European countries, especially over Greenland.

Along with the map, Trump also shared another image showing himself placing the American flag on Greenland. Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio were also seen in the image. The message on the post read, “Greenland US Territory Est 2026.”

This is not the first time Trump has made such claims. After returning to power last year, he had openly suggested that Canada should become the 51st state of the United States. The Canadian government firmly rejected the idea, which later contributed to a sharp trade dispute between the two neighbouring countries.

Why Trump Is Targeting Greenland?

Trump has repeatedly stated that the US needs Greenland for “national security” reasons. He has pointed to the island’s vast landmass and rich mineral resources as key reasons. This is despite the fact that the US already has a military base there and maintains security arrangements through NATO with Denmark, which governs Greenland.

On Monday, Trump said he no longer feels bound to think “purely of peace”, after not being awarded a Nobel Peace Prize. His comments signalled a tougher stance and renewed push to take control of Greenland.

In an unusual exchange with Norway’s Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store, Trump questioned Denmark’s authority over Greenland. He said he wanted “complete and total control” of the Arctic island.

Growing Tensions With Europe

Trump also warned that European allies opposing his Greenland plan could face heavy new tariffs. These remarks triggered concern across Europe and caused stock markets to fall when they opened on Monday.

The latest posts have intensified debate around Trump’s foreign policy approach, with critics warning that such statements could strain diplomatic relations and unsettle global markets further.
