Typhoon Dolphin Update: Typhoon Dolphin, the powerful tropical storm that’s been circulating in the Asia Pacific region since last week has entered China.  Many flights have been suspended in Eastern China as a precautionary measure.

According to Chinese media, Typhoon Dolphin has officially made landfall in mainland China. The cyclone is the most powerful one to hit the country this year and will likely bring turbulent weather to China’s East Coast.  According to local meteorological authorities Yuhuan, the powerful storm arrived in eastern Zhejiang province at about 5:30 p.m. local time. Due to the sheer scale of the cyclone, 1 million people have been evacuated and flights have been cancelled at multiple regional airports. In some cities like Shanghai, there will be a flash flood risk as well.

What is Typhoon Dolphin?

Typhoon Dolphin (also called Typhoon No 13 in Japan)is a major tropical storm and cyclone that originated in the Asia Pacific region. Category 5-equivalent Super Typhoon with maximum wind speeds peaking at 270 km/h. The storm has made landfall in Southern Japan’s Ogasawara and Okinawa islands and is expected to cause floods in Eastern China as well as some parts of Beijing and its neighbouring Hubei province. 

Typhoon Dolphin Update: Weather Forecast for Beijing & Eastern China

China’s National Meteorological Center (NMC), which comes under the China Meteorological Administration (CMA). It raised a yellow alert in Eastern China and warned of torrential rain and heavy winds. The agecy has activated Level II emergency responses.

Typhoon Dolphin  Latest News: List of Affected Areas 

The following areas in China have been placed on flood alert due to the ongoing weather conditions: 

• Zhejiang province 

• Hubei province. 

• Shanghai Municipality: 

• Beijing Capital Region

• Jiangsu province

• Fujian province

• Jiangxi province

More than 20,000 people were relocated in areas across Guangdong. And operations at airports across Hong Kong, Guangzhou, ​Shenzhen, Zhuhai and Xiamen may also be ​affected due to the storm.Rail services have also been restricted in some regions.

People in Eastern China should follow these precautions for safety: 

• Close and lock all windows, shutters, and doors. Tape windows in a cross pattern to prevent glass from shattering inward during peak gusts. 

• Remain inside a sturdy, permanent building during the height of the storm. Stay away from windows and glass structures. 

• Avoid any non essential travel.

• Stay away from water bodies

• If you reside near steep slopes, cliffs, or rivers in hilly terrains (especially in Beijing’s Miyun/Pinggu districts or rural Zhejiang), evacuate & shift to a shelter.

• Keep emergency supplies ready, as the storm may cause power cuts.
