Typhoon Lala Update: Over the weekend, Typhoon Lala made landfall in Hawaii, where Governor Josh Green previously declared a state of emergency, ahead of the hurricane’s official onset. Now, the category 1 storm has caused widespread damage, despite weakening in intensity.

According to local authorities in Hawaii Typhoon Lala has been degraded from a hurricane to a tropical storm. The cyclone weakened in intensity after landing in the state’s Big Island.

Previously forecasters warned that Lala could reach hurricane strength before arrival. However, the cyclone has brought destructive winds and torrential rains to the Pacific island state. Power outages have been reported by over 180,000 residents in Hawaii. Weather authorities have also put some counties of the state on flood alerts.

What is Typhoon Lala?

Lala is a tropical cyclone that formed in the Central Pacific Ocean on August 13, 2026. The cyclone is steadily intensifying as it marches towards the island chain. Weather scientists believe that it has been caused by a historically warm El Niño climate pattern in the Pacific Ocean but factors like unusually favourable atmospheric and ocean conditions allowed it to strengthen.

The state’s Big Island has been the most affected by the cyclone so far, with damage reports for at least 100 homes. 3 counties of the state – Maui County, Kauaʻi County and Oʻahu County, are currently under high level flood alerts.
