This morning, Iran launched attacks on multiple US allies in the Gulf, including Qatar, the UAE, Kuwait and Bahrain. UAE’s Defense Ministry confirmed the attack. Since many services have been halted as a result, are airports in the country open or closed?

The UAE is currently under attack from Iranian troops. The country’s defense ministry said that air defenses were actively “engaging” incoming missiles and drones from Iran. It also said that explosions heard in some parts of the country were due to the air defense systems getting activated.

• Sharjah International Airport (SHJ): Open and currently accommodating mostly regional flights. Some reports have hinted at side effects like ground delays, slower cargo handling, and severe regional GPS interference due to the attacks from Iran.

Passengers traveling through the international airports of UAE have been urged to remain vigilant and expect delays. Security checks at airports in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah have also been tightened. All passengers should ensure that all mobile alerts from the UAE’s government have been ensured.

All of the major international airports in the UAE remain open and operational for now. However, airspace restrictions have been exposed and delays related to flights have been reported. So passengers should be prepared to face long queues.

The Iranian attacks have affected multiple flight related services in the UAE including queues at check-in, security, and passport verifications, and stricter security checks. Aviation officials are also urging passengers to check in earlier, at least 3 to 4 hours before the flight. 

Many international airlines have temporarily suspended their flights in the Middle East due to the war, while local airlines are operating with heavy restrictions. Passengers should check the communication channel of their airline before departing.
