Wider UK Banking Closures Trend
The branch shutdowns are part of a wider restructuring across UK banking. Together, Lloyds Banking Group, Halifax and Bank of Scotland are expected to close at least 168 branches between 2026 and 2027.
Meanwhile, Santander UK has also confirmed further closures extending into 2027.
Why are UK banks closing branches?
The closures are being driven by:
-
Rising operating costs
-
Shift to mobile and online banking
-
Reduced footfall in high street branches
-
Expansion of banking hubs and post office banking services
Impact on customers
-
Less access to physical banking in many towns
-
Greater reliance on apps and online services
-
Increased use of shared banking hubs
-
Concerns for elderly and rural customers
