According to National Rail, the disruption began after an electricity supply failure at a communications centre on Thursday afternoon, severely affecting rail services across Greater Manchester and the North West of England.
Although train operations have resumed, National Rail said the scale of Thursday’s disruption has left trains and crew out of position for Friday’s scheduled services, leading to continued delays and cancellations.
The organisation said:
“Although trains are now able to operate, the severity of the disruption that occurred on the network yesterday means that a number of trains and crew are now in the wrong locations for the start of service today.”

Electricity distributor SP Electricity North West confirmed that an unexpected incident involving a high-voltage cable caused a power cut affecting more than 400 postcodes in the Harpurhey area, northeast of Manchester city centre.
The outage also impacted the Manchester Rail Operating Centre, a key facility responsible for managing train movements across the region. The company later confirmed that power had been restored.
