UK Cold Weather Alert: Snow and ice warnings issued across the UK as Arctic air brings freezing temperatures and wintry showers this weekend.
UK Cold Weather Alert: The Met Office has put out several yellow weather warnings for snow and ice as wintry showers move across the UK this weekend. The UK Health Security Agency put out a cold-weather health alert until Monday due to the severe temperature drop caused by the arrival of an Arctic maritime air mass in the area.
The snow will primarily affect the higher-elevation areas of Scotland, the northern counties of England, and western Wales. There may be significant levels of snowfall in the Scottish Highlands, upwards of 400 metres, where total accumulations could be between 10-15 cms. In the lower elevations, there may also be temporary coverages of between 1-3 cMs.in the early morning hours on Saturday.
Northeast England and places in Scotland will face higher levels of icy conditions as a result. Should you see snowfall in areas that are currently frozen, you face an elevated risk of a slipping hazard. The department is of land along high elevations, which will experience decreases in amounts of snowfall.
A band of rain and sleet will move southwards across England and Wales on Friday evening, turning to snow over hills. An overnight clear sky will lead to decreasing temperatures, which will create conditions for frost development and icy patches on untreated roads and pavements.
Saturday morning will start frosty and cold but largely dry with sunshine for many. The day will begin with sunshine before western regions experience cloud and rain, which will bring snow to lower elevations until warmer air arrives.
On Sunday, there will be winds, rain, and snow lingering; however, things should start to clear up to a better day, but breezy. The temperature from Sunday will slowly work back towards milder temperatures. There will be sun and showers on Monday, but it will be Tuesday when rain will work its way south.
Residents are advised to continue to monitor for official updates and be careful with icy conditions on the roads.
