United Airlines: 9/11 Flyover in Denver With United Jet and F-16s Is Called Off After Public Safety Concerns; Here’s What Happened

United Airlines has scrapped a planned 9/11 anniversary flyover over Denver, which would have paired a Boeing 777 with four F-16 fighter jets timed to the moment United Flight 175 struck the World Trade Center in 2001.

United Airlines has abandoned plans to send a passenger jet escorted by four fighter aircraft over Denver to mark the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks, after city officials raised the alarm that the display could be mistaken for a real emergency and swamp local dispatch lines with panicked calls. The airline confirmed the U-turn on Wednesday afternoon, just two days before the flyover had been due to take place over the Colorado capital.

What Was United Airlines Planning For 9/11 In Denver?

The commemoration, organised as part of a private remembrance for United employees, was set to feature a United Boeing 777 flying in formation with four F-16 fighter jets near Denver International Airport on Friday morning. Organisers had scheduled the flight for 9:03 a.m., deliberately matching the exact moment in 2001 when hijackers flew United Flight 175 into the South Tower of the World Trade Center.

A United spokesperson, Russell Carlton, said the flyover had been requested by the airline’s leadership in Denver, where United operates one of its largest hubs alongside a major pilot training centre, and was intended as a tribute to colleagues lost in the attacks.

How Did the Plan Come to Light?

Word of the flyover first reached Denver’s Office of Emergency Management roughly a week before the anniversary, according to reporting from travel outlet One Mile at a Time, prompting the office to begin briefing dispatchers and first responders on what to expect.

The story gained wider attention on Wednesday when local broadcaster 9NEWS detailed the scale of the preparation under way, reporting that the display was designed to echo the scenes of September 11, 2001, when military jets were scrambled to intercept hijacked aircraft over US airspace. United announced the cancellation roughly two hours after that report was published.

Why Did It Alarm Denver Officials?

City officials worried that residents unaware of the planned commemoration could interpret the sight of fighter jets shadowing a passenger aircraft as evidence of a genuine hijacking, particularly given the symbolism of the timing.

Denver Office of Emergency Management spokeswoman Loa Esquilin-Garcia said the city was working to stop its 911 and 311 lines from becoming overwhelmed by calls from alarmed residents as the country marked a quarter century since the attacks. Colorado Air National Guard spokesperson Chance Johnson added that clearance for the military aircraft involved was still being reviewed at the state level in the days leading up to the planned event.

Was Denver City Consulted?

Officials in Denver Mayor Mike Johnston’s office indicated the city had played no part in approving the display. Mayoral spokesperson Jon Ewing said, “We were informed by United they were doing this, not asked,” underlining that the decision to stage the flyover rested entirely with the airline rather than City Hall. United, for its part, said it was not aware of any other US city where a similar pairing of a passenger jet with fighter escorts had been planned for the anniversary, and did not address how close the flight path would have brought the aircraft to downtown Denver’s high-rise buildings.

Why Did United Call Off The Flyover?

In a statement issued by email, Carlton said the flyover had been meant as a gesture to honour those lost within the pilot community, but confirmed the airline would suspend those particular plans due to concerns in the community, while continuing with the rest of the day’s remembrance activities.

The decision came together quickly once local media coverage made clear how much emergency planning had gone into managing potential public reaction, with the airline choosing to withdraw the display rather than proceed alongside a citywide alert effort.

What Is Still Going Ahead On Friday?

United confirmed that its internal memorial events for staff will continue as planned, with observances held at the airline’s Flight Training Center and at Denver International Airport. Only the airborne portion of the tribute, the formation flight timed to the moment Flight 175 struck the World Trade Center, has been withdrawn. The episode adds to a broader pattern this week of organisations across the country reassessing how visually literal 9/11 tributes should be, even as memorial events tied to the 25th anniversary continue nationwide on Friday.
