A terrifying incident unfolded at the United States’ Denver International Airport on Friday when a Frontier Airlines plane bound for Los Angeles (LAX) struck an individual on the runway during its takeoff roll.
The high-speed Airbus A321neo plane turned the airport scene into chaos and a tragedy, aborting its abrupt departure after hitting an individual, which resulted in a massive engine fire and heavy smoke, prompting the frantic evacuation of all the passengers and the crew via emergency slides. The incident happened at around 11:19 pm GMT, Friday. According to a statement released by the Denver International Airport, there were a total of 231 passengers on board.
The aircraft sustained “very heavy damage” from the impact and the subsequent fire.
A federal investigator has been ordered to probe the catastrophic security breach that allowed a pedestrian to enter an active runway, triggering a high-stakes emergency that forced pilots of Flight 2415 to immediately abort the departure.
The pilots reported seeing an “unauthorised individual” on the tarmac moments before the impact.
Despite immediate emergency braking manoeuvres, the aircraft struck the person at a very high rate of speed, leading to a frantic radio call from the cockpit to air traffic control: “We’re stopping! Smoke on aircraft!”
As the plane came to a sudden halt, its landing gear and right-side engine ignited shortly, leaving the passengers terrified.
The incident sparked a massive response from emergency services, and passengers worldwide have been left in a state of shock.
Shortly after the evacuation, the airfield was cordoned off for an intensive investigation.
Sources told Denver’s local networks that the plane’s sudden abort triggered an instant “ground stop” for several nearby runways, and the authorities rushed to the scene to assess the victim and secure the perimeter.

Chaos on the Tarmac, Person Killed
The incident turned out to be fatal for the individual hit by the plane on the runway; at least one minor injury was reported among the passengers on the plane. The plane hit killed the person who was reportedly walking on a runway during takeoff Friday night at Denver International Airport, sources told broadcasters. The person, who hasn’t been identified with a name yet, was at least partially consumed by one of the engines, an official separately confirmed to ABC, adding that the halt caused panic and engine fire that was extinguished by firefighters. Passengers were bused to terminals by emergency crews.
The Air traffic control audio from ATC.com captured the pilots declaring an emergency to the ATC.” Tower, Frontier 4345, we’re stopping on the runway. Uh, we just hit somebody… we have an engine fire,” the pilot was heard on the audio. When asked to elaborate on how many people were on the plane, the pilot responded, “We have 231 souls on board… There was an individual walking across the runway.” Moments later, the pilot reported fire. “We’ve got smoke on the aircraft, we’re gonna evacuate on the runway.”
Passengers Describe Terrible Scenes
As smoke began to fill the cabin, the flight crew initiated emergency evacuation protocols. Passengers have described a terrifying scene as they were ushered toward the emergency slides while airport fire crews rushed to extinguish the flames licking at the right engine.
“There was a lot of panic when we saw the smoke, but the crew got the doors open fast,” one passenger told local Denver reporters. Emergency responders confirmed that the fire was contained to the engine housing and did not breach the main fuselage, preventing further casualties among the travellers on board.
The Denver Fire Department and airport emergency medical services were on the scene within minutes. While no serious injuries were reported among the passengers or the crew during the evacuation, the individual struck on the runway was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities are currently investigating whether the individual was an airport employee or an intruder who breached the perimeter.
Investigation into Runway Breach
The US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) have launched a joint investigation into the “extraordinary” security failure. Investigators are reviewing surveillance footage to determine exactly how and where the individual managed to bypass multi-layered security fences and sensors to reach the active flight line. Standard airport protocols are designed to keep active runways as “sterile” environments, making a pedestrian strike during a takeoff roll an exceedingly rare and severe event in modern aviation.
Frontier Airlines Releases Statement
Frontier Airlines issued a statement confirming that the Airbus A321neo involved in the accident is being taken out of service for an extensive damage assessment. The airline emphasised that it is cooperating with federal agencies, stating, “The safety of our passengers and crew is our number one priority, and we are working closely with local and federal authorities to investigate this incident”. The runway remained closed for several hours as forensic teams processed the scene, leading to significant delays for dozens of other flights at the Denver hub.
Airlines’ Full Statement:
“As flight 4345 was departing this evening from Denver International Airport to Los Angeles International Airport, the aircraft reportedly struck a pedestrian on the runway during takeoff. Smoke was reported in the cabin and the pilots aborted takeoff. Passengers were then safely evacuated via slides as a matter of precaution. The Airbus A321 was carrying 224 passengers and seven crew members. We are investigating this incident and gathering more information in coordination with the airport and other safety authorities. We are deeply saddened by this event.”
Security Concerns at US Airports
The incident has raised immediate concerns regarding perimeter security at major US airports. While Denver International is equipped with advanced detection systems, this breach highlights potential vulnerabilities in ground-level security during peak operational hours and neglects to some extent. Aviation safety experts suggest that the investigation will likely focus on whether the breach was a deliberate act of interference or a tragic oversight in ground personnel management.
The passengers who were bused back to the terminal were provided with counselling and rebooked on alternative flights. The Airbus engine is under examination by NTSB engineers. The NTSB is expected to release a preliminary report within the next several days. The Denver Police Department is assisting with the investigation into the incident.
