Earlier this month, US President Donald Trump announced that he reached a ‘great and fair’ deal with Canada regarding the upcoming Gordon Howe bridge. But now, Mark Carney has announced that Canada won’t share the revenue, with its neighbour until debt repayment.
US Canada Conflict: Mark Carney’s Full Statement
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney made a bold statement this morning regarding the status of the revenue sharing agreement from the Gordon Howe bridge.
Speaking at a press briefing, Carney said “Any sharing of the toll revenue won’t happen until all of the debt is repaid. We expect that after those costs, for the first few years, net revenue will be modest. When the splitting begins, all of the portions that go to the U.S. government will be reinvested in economic development”.
This is in contradict to what Donald Trump said about the toll sharing. “I was able to cut a MUCH BETTER DEAL for America, and by so doing, will be allowing the new and spectacular Gordie Howe International Bridge, spanning Detroit and Windsor, Ontario, to open on July 27th, as scheduled”, the US President said in a Truth Social post. He also described the initial agreement proposed by Canada as ‘unacceptable’.
US Canada Conflict: Is There Debt Between US & Canada?
Yes, the US owes a massive debt to Canada regarding the cost of the bridge. For the construction of the bill, Canada paid the full $4.7 billion dollar amount, even though revenue from the bridge will benefit both countries. So, as per Carney, first Canada will recoup its initial investment amount and then enter a revenue sharing arrangement.
When Will the Jointly Owned US-Canada Bridge Open?
The jointly owned US Canada bridge, will be inaugurated on Jul 27, 2026. Construction work on the bridge started in 2018 and its initial opening was scheduled for much earlier, but was put on hold due to objections from the Donald Trump administration. However, the date for when it will be opened to the public has not been disclosed yet.
Importance of the New Bridge
The new Gordon Howe International Bridge, named after Canadian-born National Hockey League great and Detroit Red Wings star Gordie Howe, is meant to be a symbol of unity between both countries.
It is also expected to provide an economic boost worth billions of dollars and ‘provide options for commuters, tourists and businesses’. The bridge which spans close to 2.5 kilometers across the Detroit River, will connect Interstate 75 in Detroit, Michigan directly to Highway 401 in Windsor, Ontario.
US Canada Conflict: American Authorities Response
The American authorities have not issued an official response to Carney’s comments yet. However, tensions between both countries will most likely renew due to the difference in opinion.
