US President Donald Trump has confirmed that he will travel to China in April 2026. While speaking to reporters, Trump said he is eager to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping and described their personal ties as positive. He also revealed that Xi is expected to visit the United States later in the year.

Speaking aboard Air Force One while returning to the US from his two-day visit to Davos, Trump said, “We’re gonna make a trip. I’m going in April.” Emphasising his rapport with the Chinese leader, he added, “I’ve always had a great relationship.”

Trump acknowledged that relations between Washington and Beijing had faced serious strain during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, he said the situation has now improved significantly. “It was a very strained relationship during COVID, but now it’s an excellent relationship,” he told reporters.

US-China Diplomatic Ties:  Focus on Trade and Farm Exports

The US President pointed to growing trade activity as a sign of warming ties between the two countries. He highlighted China’s increased purchase of American agricultural goods, especially soybeans.

“Look at all the farm products they’re buying now,” Trump said. “Soybeans they’re buying a lot of soybeans.”

Trump stressed that these purchases are benefiting American farmers and boosting confidence in the economy. “That makes our farmers happy, and that makes me happy,” he added. This upcoming trip will mark Trump’s first visit to China since he returned to office.

Background of US-China Relations

Relations between the United States and China have been tense for several years. Successive US administrations have viewed China as the country’s primary global rival. Major disagreements have revolved around trade policies, advanced technology, and national security concerns.

Despite these challenges, both nations have continued to maintain strong commercial links, particularly in sectors such as agriculture and energy.

China remains one of the most important markets for US farm exports. Soybeans, in particular, are closely tracked because large purchases by China are often seen as an indicator of improving diplomatic relations between the two countries.
