Ali Shamkhani, key adviser to Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, stated that an immediate US-Iran nuclear agreement could be reached if talks focus solely on Iran's non-production of nuclear weapons. The comments came as the third round of indirect US-Iran nuclear talks concluded in Geneva on Thursday with serious discussions on nuclear issues and sanctions relief.
Ali Shamkhani, former Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps commander and Khamenei's adviser, posted on X that confining negotiations to Iran's non-production of nuclear weapons aligns with the Leader's fatwa and Iran's defense doctrine. He emphasized an "immediate agreement is within reach" under these terms. Shamkhani noted Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in Geneva has "sufficient support and authority to conclude such an agreement."
The talks ended with "great seriousness," according to Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei. Both delegations presented "very important and practical proposals and initiatives" on the nuclear field and sanctions relief. Araghchi led Iran's side in the indirect discussions with the US.
White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt said on Tuesday that President Donald Trump prefers diplomacy as the first option with Iran. Trump remains prepared to use lethal force if necessary. The US engaged seriously in Geneva's third round.
Russia offered last week to accept enriched uranium from Iran to help resolve the nuclear matter. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov confirmed on Wednesday: "We had an initiative and stated our readiness to accept enriched uranium, which was discussed." Peskov stressed the outcome remains entirely between the US and Iran, urging no prejudging.
Iran and Russia announced joint naval maneuvers set for Friday in the Sea of Oman and northern Indian Ocean. ISNA agency quoted drill spokesman Rear Admiral Hassan Maghsoudloo stating the aim is to strengthen maritime security and deepen naval relations. The exercises coincide with ongoing US-Iran nuclear talks.
