US-Iran Latest Update: The situation in the Middle East was worsened when Iran declared that it has launched a drone and a missile strike on a US-linked air base in Saudi Arabia. The Iranian state media disclosed that military properties worth a lot of money such as an airborne surveillance plane were destroyed in the strike evoking the question of an escalation of the situation more in the region.

The reported attack targeted Prince Sultan Air Base, which is about 96 kilometres away in Riyadh. The base has been effective in terms of monitoring in the region and air operations as it is run by the Royal Saudi Air Force and also is used by US troops. In Iran, the strike was reported to have been made up of six ballistic missiles and 29 drones that hit important infrastructural operations.

The Iranian media reported that the aircraft was a Boeing E-3 Sentry airborne early warning plane which had been damaged during the attack. The surveillance aircraft, more popularly referred to as an AWACS, is an aircraft used to trace airplanes as well as to monitor the launching of missiles and coordinate military actions over long distances. It is estimated that the aircraft is worth more than 700 million dollars and thus it is amongst the most expensive airborne command vehicles on the air.

International agencies reported that no less than 15 US personnel were wounded in the attack with 5 seriously injured and two in severe condition. Iranian media outlets also published photos purporting that there was apparent structural damage in the aircrafts at the base and US authorities have not verified the allegations. The Central Command of the United States has not given an official evaluation.

The United States Navy has further deployed more troops into the Middle East to counter the escalating tensions. US vessel USS tripoli which carries some 2500 Marines has been deployed in the region while the USS Boxer and other naval forces have been also commissioned to enhance operational readiness.
