US President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that he has abruptly frozen a massive, pre-scheduled military assault against Iran, just hours before it was set to launch, at the request of America’s Gulf allies. Trump claimed that he received an urgent request from key Arab leaders not to go ahead with the military escalation that would further destabilise the region.
The extraordinary disclosure was made via Trump’s Truth Social platform, where the US president declared that the United States military had been fully mobilised to execute a large-scale strike on Tuesday.
Trump claimed that the operation was halted following personal interventions by Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, and UAE President Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, who pleaded for more time to finalise an ongoing regional peace framework.
The dramatic, eleventh-hour pause marks the most critical turning point yet in the 80-day-old war between US-led forces and Tehran.
“I have been asked by the Emir of Qatar, Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia, Mohammed bin Salman Al Saud, and the President of the United Arab Emirates, Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, to hold off on our planned Military attack of the Islamic Republic of Iran, which was scheduled for tomorrow,” Trump wrote in his online statement.
“Based on my respect for the above-mentioned leaders, I have instructed Secretary of War, Pete Hegseth, The Chairman of The Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Daniel Caine, and The United States Military, that we will NOT be doing the scheduled attack of Iran tomorrow.”
Gulf Leaders Request US Stand Down
The sudden US stand-down comes amid intense, behind-the-scenes backchannel diplomacy to end the US-Iran hostilities, unblock the strategic Strait of Hormuz and restore peace in the Middle East. Trump noted that the Gulf heads of state explicitly requested the delay because “serious negotiations are now taking place.” The allied Arab leaders reportedly assured Washington that, in their view, a comprehensive agreement could be reached to stabilise the Middle East without further bloodshed.
Trump emphasised that any final diplomatic breakthrough must firmly address the core American security objective that triggered the conflict. “This Deal will include, importantly, NO NUCLEAR WEAPONS FOR IRAN!” the US president declared, adding that the proposed terms would be “very acceptable” to the United States and all neighbouring nations.
However, Trump made it clear that the American military remains on a hair-trigger alert. Trump warned that he has ordered Hegseth and General Caine to be “prepared to go forward with a full, large-scale assault of Iran, on a moment’s notice, in the event that an acceptable Deal is not reached.” Speaking shortly after to the New York Post, Trump doubled down on his hardline stance, asserting that Tehran wants to settle “more than ever, because they know… what’s going to be happening soon.”
Pakistan Mediates as Tehran Tightens Chokehold
The diplomatic reprieve coincides with a brand-new counter-proposal delivered by the Iranian government. According to Iranian state-run agencies and regional reporting, Tehran has officially submitted an amended set of peace terms to the White House through Pakistani mediators, who are acting as the primary diplomatic buffer.
Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani publicly reiterated Doha’s “full support” for the Pakistan-led mediation, stressing that all parties must immediately engage in constructive dialogue to sustain the ceasefire and “create the right atmosphere for progress.”
Yet even as diplomacy staggered forward, dangerous friction continued to mount early into the week. A newly formed Iranian maritime regulatory body, dubbed the Persian Gulf Strait Authority (PGSA), has issued a provocative decree declaring that any commercial or naval passage through the strategic Strait of Hormuz without its explicit, prior permission “will be considered illegal.”
The maritime ultimatum directly challenged Western freedom-of-navigation mandates and underscores the volatile reality on the ground. While Arab leaders bought Tehran a temporary reprieve from American bombers, Trump signalled that Iran remains just one misstep away from bombardment.
