US-Israel-Iran War Latest Live News: Brent Crude Crosses $100 As Strait Of Hormuz Crisis Deepens And Global Supply Fears Grow

Brent crude oil prices crossed $100 a barrel as escalating fighting between the US and Iran raised concerns over global energy supplies. The surge could push up fuel, transport and everyday costs while adding to inflationary pressures worldwide.

Brent crude oil prices moved above $100 a barrel on Wednesday, marking the first time since July that the international benchmark settled in triple-digit territory. The latest jump came as the conflict between the US and Iran intensified, raising fresh concerns about disruptions to oil supplies. Brent crude settled at $101.21 a barrel, while US benchmark West Texas Intermediate (WTI) ended at $96.05 a barrel. The rise followed attacks involving oil infrastructure and vessels in the Middle East, adding to uncertainty around energy shipments.

The latest rally has renewed concerns about the wider economic impact of the conflict, particularly if crude prices remain elevated for an extended period.

Why Are Oil Prices Rising?

The latest increase is closely linked to the worsening security situation in the Middle East and the disruption to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial route for global energy supplies. Around one-fifth of the world’s oil supply previously moved through the waterway. Since the war began, shipping activity through the strait has been heavily restricted, increasing fears that further attacks could tighten global supplies.

Oil prices initially surged after Israel and the US launched military action against Iran in late February. Brent crude briefly approached $120 a barrel during the early stages of the conflict before easing as hopes for negotiations and a possible reopening of the shipping route emerged. Those hopes have since weakened as fighting resumed and diplomatic efforts failed to deliver a lasting agreement.

How Will Higher Oil Prices Affect Consumers?

A sustained rise in crude prices could quickly translate into higher costs across the economy. Petrol and diesel prices are among the most visible effects for consumers. Higher diesel prices can also increase the cost of transporting goods because trucks, agricultural machinery and several other forms of commercial transport depend heavily on the fuel.

The impact can eventually reach food, medicines, household products and online deliveries, as businesses face higher transportation and production expenses. Air travel could also become more expensive as airlines deal with rising jet fuel costs. Petroleum-based products, including synthetic fabrics and certain rubber goods, may face higher production costs as well.

Strait Of Hormuz Adds To Supply Concerns

The situation around the Strait of Hormuz remains one of the biggest risks for the global oil market. The waterway is not only important for crude oil shipments but also carries large volumes of liquefied natural gas. Any prolonged disruption could therefore affect both energy markets and industries that depend on natural gas. Higher energy costs could also create pressure on agriculture because natural gas is an important input in the production of nitrogen fertilisers. A prolonged energy shock could consequently raise food prices and increase inflationary pressure in several countries.

Could Oil Prices Rise Further?

The future direction of crude prices will largely depend on how long supply disruptions continue and whether tensions in the Middle East ease. Analysts have warned that a prolonged shutdown or severe restriction of traffic through the Strait of Hormuz could push prices significantly higher. Some estimates have placed crude at $95-$120 a barrel if shipping disruptions persist, while major damage to energy infrastructure could potentially trigger an even sharper spike.
