A cargo vessel was struck by a projectile while transiting the Strait of Hormuz on Tuesday, leaving the engine room damaged and one crew member injured, according to the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO). The incident has renewed concerns over shipping safety in the strategic waterway as tensions between the US and Iran continue to escalate.
The remaining crew members were being assisted by the Omani Coast Guard, the maritime agency said.

The vessel came under attack while sailing through the Strait of Hormuz, with the projectile causing damage to its engine room. One crew member was reported injured, while the rest of the crew received assistance from Omani authorities. The incident comes amid renewed Iranian warnings over attempts to pass through the waterway. Iranian military spokesperson Ebrahim Zolfaghari reportedly warned that vessels attempting to cross the strait could face attacks.

The latest incident comes after a 60-day negotiating ceasefire between Washington and Tehran expired without a formal agreement. US President Donald Trump has ruled out extending the ceasefire, saying Iran has not accepted terms he considers necessary to end the conflict. Analysts at Eurasia Group said both sides were likely to maintain their positions, reducing the prospects of an immediate diplomatic breakthrough.
Shipping through the Strait of Hormuz has remained severely disrupted, with only three vessels reportedly transiting the waterway on Sunday, according to ship-tracking data from Kpler. The strait is a critical global energy route, handling roughly one-fifth of the world’s crude oil and gas shipments before the conflict.
What Is The Impact On Oil Prices?
The disruption has already put pressure on global oil markets. US crude futures rose 0.25% to around $84.70 a barrel on Tuesday after gaining 2.6% in the previous session. Brent crude was trading at around $90.86 a barrel after rising above $90 on Monday. Analysts expect any recovery in shipping through the Strait of Hormuz to remain limited while tensions between Washington and Tehran persist.
