US-Israel-Iran War Latest Live News: The US-Israel-Iran conflict took on another threatening phase following reports of an explosion taking place in proximity to Iran’s Qeshm Island in the Strait of Hormuz. The cause of the explosion was not determined by Iran’s official news agency IRNA and was unknown at the time of writing, and it is unclear whether it took place from the sea or from inside the island itself.

This takes place while military tensions are still running high in the Gulf region, and pressure regarding the nuclear issue is mounting while Iran has refused a new International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) resolution to refer the nuclear issue to the UN Security Council. This motion passed through with 23 out of 35 board members voting in favor, 8 abstaining, and 3 voting against.

US-Israel-Iran War Latest Live News: Explosions Reported Near Qeshm Island

The alleged blast that occurred near Qeshm brings more uncertainty to a highly unstable security environment. Qeshm lies adjacent to the Strait of Hormuz, which is regarded as one of the most significant naval passages in the entire world and there is no known cause of the explosion yet. According to IRNA, the cause of the sound was yet to be determined to be either from inside the island of Qeshm or from out at sea.

“It is not yet clear whether the sound originated from the sea or if the explosion occurred within Qeshm”, IRNA’s report says.

Iranian media reported multiple explosions in Sirik and Minab County. Fars News Agency, citing Hormozgan officials, said the sounds appeared to have come from the sea while earlier, explosions were also reported on Qeshm Island.

US-Israel-Iran War Latest Live News: Iran Signals Openness to Regional Dialogue

Despite all the tensions, the Foreign Ministry of Iran asserts that Iran is ready for dialogue and cooperation with neighboring nations. In particular, it maintains that the security in the Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman should be handled by the regional powers themselves. This political message holds great significance in light of the fact that the Strait of Hormuz still plays a pivotal role in this ongoing conflict. The strait is a vital passage through which energy flows across the world.

US-Israel-Iran War Latest Live News: IAEA Resolution Puts Nuclear Dispute Back at UN

The most recent act by the IAEA represents a significant step up in diplomacy and the 35-nation Board of Governors moved to refer Iran to the UN Security Council because it failed to show adequate cooperation and access to nuclear inspection.

This is the first instance of such a referral concerning Iran in 20 years whereas te vote was supported by the United States, Great Britain, France and Germany. Iran, Russia and China were against it, with several nations abstaining from voting on it.

“The approval of the Board of Governors’ resolution against Iran’s peaceful nuclear program, proposed by the atomic bomb possessors, the perpetrators of Hiroshima, and the violators of the JCPOA, is a symbol of today’s world’s double standards,” Mohammad Reza Aref said.

“Last year, there was much ado about the reimposition of the UN nuclear sanctions,” Ghashghavi said in a post on X.

“Now, once again, to cap off America’s military attacks, they have issued a new resolution in the IAEA Board of Governors, even though they know it will lead nowhere, just as in the past. Europe and America will pay the price for their division of labour.”

US-Israel-Iran War Latest Live News: Why Iran Calls the Resolution Symbolic

The Iranian representative Hassan Ghashghavi has characterized the IAEA resolution as mostly symbolic, contending that the resolution will not yield anything concrete. This perspective is indicative of the general opposition of Iran to the pressure exerted by the West, insisting on the peaceful character of its nuclear program. There is a pragmatic problem too at the Security Council as Russia and China, both of whom are permanent members and hold the right of veto, have opposed the pressure on Tehran.

US-Israel-Iran War Latest Live News: The Nuclear Numbers Behind the Crisis

The threat of nuclear capability becomes especially grave due to the fact that IAEA estimates that, prior to the latest attacks, Iran possessed 440.9 kg of uranium enriched to 60%. This enrichment degree exceeds civilian reactor needs, while being short of the weapons-level enrichment.

As per IAEA, this amount may in theory be enough to create up to ten nuclear warheads, if the uranium is further processed and turned into nuclear weapons, but, nevertheless, no proof exists yet that Iran has actually made these weapons. The main problem now is that of verification. The lack of international inspection capability means that the outside world has less insight into the situation with Iran’s nuclear capabilities.
