Iran has emerged from months of fighting with a stronger sense of its military capabilities and appears prepared for a prolonged confrontation with the United States, according to recent US intelligence assessments.

The reports suggest Tehran may be unwilling to quickly agree to a deal with Washington and could instead seek to increase pressure on President Donald Trump, particularly as the US approaches its midterm elections.

What Does US Intelligence Say About Iran?

US officials briefed on the assessments said Iran has gained a better understanding of its military strengths after months of intermittent conflict. Although recent exchanges have remained limited, officials believe Tehran could escalate its attacks in the coming weeks. Iran is also thought to be increasingly aware of the leverage it can exert through the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial route for global energy shipments.

The assessments indicate that reaching a comprehensive agreement to end the conflict could prove difficult.

Iran May Target US Interests Across The Region

Iran has previously demonstrated its ability to strike American military positions and commercial shipping in the Middle East. US officials believe similar actions could resume, including attacks on American bases, vessels operating near the Strait of Hormuz and infrastructure in the region.

The assessments also point to Iran’s continuing missile and drone capabilities, despite the damage its military infrastructure has suffered during the conflict. Representative Jason Crow, a member of the US House Intelligence Committee, said Iran appears to believe it can absorb significant damage while continuing to pursue a longer-term strategy.

Cyberattacks Emerge As Another Iranian Tool

Cyber operations could provide Tehran with another way to put pressure on the United States without directly escalating military attacks. US officials have linked Iran-backed hackers to attacks against more than 100 water systems across the country in late July. While the incidents did not make drinking water unsafe, some systems experienced disruptions that required operators to manually intervene.

Officials have also warned that Iranian-linked cyber groups have shown interest in American oil and gas infrastructure, although there is no confirmation that major energy systems have been successfully breached. Cybersecurity experts believe Iranian hacking groups may have regained confidence after suffering setbacks earlier in the war.

Why Is The Strait Of Hormuz Important?

The Strait of Hormuz remains one of Iran’s most significant sources of leverage. The narrow waterway handles a substantial share of global oil and gas shipments, meaning prolonged disruption could have consequences far beyond the Middle East.

US officials believe Iran has developed a more sophisticated understanding of how to use the strait as a bargaining tool. Continued restrictions on shipping could also keep energy prices elevated and increase economic pressure on American consumers.

Trump Relies On Economic Pressure

Trump has so far shown little interest in restarting negotiations and has instead indicated that economic pressure could force Tehran to compromise. US sanctions are expected to remain a central part of Washington’s strategy. However, officials familiar with the intelligence assessments warn that additional pressure could also trigger further Iranian retaliation.

Iran may calculate that prolonging the conflict could create increasing political difficulties for the Trump administration, particularly if high energy prices persist.

Iran Could Seek To Outlast Trump

Some US officials believe Tehran may be willing to continue the confrontation until at least the US midterm elections. The calculation would be that the economic consequences of the conflict, particularly higher fuel prices, could damage Trump’s political standing and increase pressure on his administration to scale back military operations.

Iran has also previously been accused by US officials of attempting to influence American political debates through propaganda and cyber activity.
