He added: “If there were professional diplomats involved from the US side, it never would have been written the way that it was. It never would have allowed Iran that wiggle room.” Hood said there is “no sign” of reviving the MoU or reaching a new agreement because “both sides have locked horns.”

Tehran has rejected reported plans for tougher US sanctions and a possible land blockade, saying additional pressure will not force Iran to change its position. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei said, “These measures have no effect on Iran’s position,” Baghaei told reporters.
He accused Washington of following a “vicious cycle of war, discrimination, pressure and sanctions” dating back to the 1953 coup in Iran. Baghaei also criticised previous US sanctions campaigns and Trump’s first-term “maximum pressure” strategy.

“Due to the gross and widespread violation of the memorandum by the United States just a few weeks after it was signed, no talks were initiated,” he said. “As a result, the issue of a 60-day deadline became entirely moot,” Baghaei added.
