Qatar Rejects Use of Strait as ‘Bargaining Chip’
Qatar also rejected the use of the Strait of Hormuz as a bargaining tool. Doha called for the waterway to be reopened without conditions.
Qatar has previously condemned attacks on commercial tankers in the Strait. In August, its Foreign Ministry described an Iranian attack on two UAE oil tankers as a violation of international law and freedom of navigation.
Two Sailors Killed in Tanker Incident
Saudi Arabia said the tanker incident resulted in the deaths of two Filipino crew members. Bahri said the sailors were killed during a security incident involving its vessel SIDR while it was transiting the Strait of Hormuz on August 31.
The deaths have further increased concerns over the risks faced by civilian crews using the waterway.
Strait of Hormuz Tensions Rise
The Strait of Hormuz remains at the centre of the wider conflict. Several commercial vessels have faced attacks or disruptions in the area in recent months.
