Iran has warned that it could escalate its military posture in the Strait of Hormuz and across the wider region after a 60-day window for reaching a permanent peace agreement expired without a breakthrough. A senior Iranian official told Reuters that Tehran could launch a “timely and precise” attack to break the US naval blockade if diplomatic efforts fail.
The development comes as both Washington and Tehran have ruled out extending the interim agreement, raising concerns that military tensions could intensify further.
Why Is Iran Threatening Military Action In The Strait of Hormuz?
The Iranian warning follows the collapse of an interim agreement reached in June that had provided for an end to military operations, sanctions and nuclear negotiations, alongside the removal of the US blockade and reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei dismissed the 60-day deadline, arguing that the US had violated the understanding from the outset and that formal negotiations had never begun. Tehran has therefore rejected extending the arrangement and warned that military action could follow if diplomacy fails to resolve the standoff.

US President Donald Trump said Iran wants an agreement but is unwilling to accept the terms Washington considers necessary. “They want to make a deal, but they’re not going to make the kind of a deal that I feel is necessary,” Trump said. He has also previously called on Iran to surrender, saying Tehran should “put up a white flag of surrender”.
Despite the breakdown in the interim arrangement, the Trump administration has indicated that it is prepared to take a longer-term approach to negotiations.

US Energy Secretary Chris Wright said Washington was playing the “long game”, while envoy Jared Kushner said Trump would remain “patient on a deal”. The remarks suggest that the US is not rushing to reach a new agreement despite the expiry of the 60-day window. At the same time, US officials have indicated that backchannel communication with Tehran remains active.
The conflicting signals from Washington and Tehran leave the possibility of further negotiations open, even as military tensions remain elevated.

Oil prices have continued to reflect concerns over the future of the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important oil shipping routes. Brent crude settled near $91 a barrel on Monday, while West Texas Intermediate (WTI) traded above $85. Any further military escalation around the waterway could increase concerns over global energy supplies and put additional upward pressure on crude prices.
