US-Israel-Iran War Latest Live News: The US-Iran war has entered a phase where neither military pressure nor diplomacy appears capable of delivering a decisive breakthrough. As American forces tighten their maritime pressure on Iran and Tehran continues to resist Washington’s demands, former US Defence Secretary Leon Panetta has warned that the conflict could continue for another six months.

Panetta’s warning comes at a particularly tense moment. US forces have continued enforcing a naval blockade around Iran, while fresh attacks on Iranian oil tankers have raised the risk of another escalation. At the same time, efforts launched earlier this year to establish a diplomatic route out of the war have failed to produce a lasting settlement.

The former Pentagon chief told The Guardian that the conflict has become a dangerous stalemate and could eventually resemble the prolonged wars the US fought in Iraq and Afghanistan.

US-Israel-Iran War Latest Live News: Leon Panetta Warns US-Iran War Could Continue for Another Six Months

Panetta, who served as US defence secretary and previously headed the CIA under former President Barack Obama, said Washington and Tehran have very limited options for ending the fighting.

“It’s no mystery that the United States and Iran are caught in a terrible stalemate, in which there really are very few options available to bring this war to an end,” Panetta said.

He added: “I think the likelihood is this war is going to continue for another six months without being resolved,”

Panetta also warned that the conflict could develop into “another failed war” in the West Asia “like Iraq and Afghanistan”.

His comments reflect a growing concern that the war may have moved beyond a short military campaign and into a prolonged confrontation in which neither side can easily back down.

US-Israel-Iran War Latest Live News: Why the US-Iran Conflict Has Reached a Stalemate?

The latest assessment comes as analysts increasingly describe the conflict as a stalemate.

A Washington Institute analysis published earlier this week also described the six-month-old war as a situation in which neither Washington nor Tehran has achieved a clear military or diplomatic victory. It said the two sides have effectively become locked in a struggle over oil and shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.

For Washington, maintaining pressure on Iran could weaken Tehran economically and force it toward negotiations.

For Iran, continuing to challenge the US presence and retain leverage over the Strait of Hormuz gives Tehran a way to push back against American pressure.

That creates a difficult situation for both sides: ending the conflict may require concessions that neither government currently appears ready to make.

US-Israel-Iran War Latest Live News: US Has Redirected Dozens of Commercial Ships

The US military’s maritime campaign has also expanded.

US Central Command said on September 6 that American forces had redirected 92 commercial vessels, disabled three and boarded two while enforcing the blockade.

That figure has increased steadily in recent days. CENTCOM had reported 87 redirected commercial vessels on September 4.

The growing number of vessels affected shows how the conflict has moved beyond direct missile and air strikes. Commercial shipping has increasingly become part of the wider confrontation.

The US says its maritime operations are aimed at enforcing restrictions on Iran, while Tehran has continued to challenge Washington’s efforts to restrict its oil exports.

US-Israel-Iran War Latest Live News: US Strikes Three Iranian Oil Tankers

The maritime confrontation escalated again on September 5.

CENTCOM said US forces struck three Iranian crude oil carriers after Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps launched ballistic missiles toward two US Navy warships.

According to the US military, two Iranian oil carriers were permanently disabled and another was destroyed after its crew was ordered to abandon the vessel. Washington said the ships were connected to a network that finances Iran’s Revolutionary Guard and regional proxies.

The strikes marked another significant escalation because they directly targeted Iranian oil transportation.

The latest action also came as Iran continued to challenge US control over shipping routes around the Strait of Hormuz.

US-Israel-Iran War Latest Live News: Iran Warns US Against Further Escalation

Tehran has shown little sign of backing down.

Iranian officials have warned that additional American attacks could trigger stronger retaliation. Reuters reported on September 6 that Iran was trying to address economic problems created by US sanctions and restrictions on its oil exports while warning Washington that further attacks could produce a faster and more painful response.

The economic pressure is becoming increasingly important.

US sanctions and the blockade have reduced Iran’s ability to export oil and access foreign currency. Reuters reported that Iran is facing severe economic pressure, including a sharp decline in oil exports, a weakening currency and rising prices.

Washington appears to be betting that the economic squeeze will eventually force Tehran back toward negotiations.

Iran, however, continues to use its ability to disrupt regional shipping and retaliate against American military targets as leverage.

US-Israel-Iran War Latest Live News: Panetta Raises Concerns Over Pentagon Turmoil

Panetta’s warning goes beyond the battlefield.

The former defence secretary also raised concerns about reported tensions within the Pentagon and US military leadership. He argued that instability inside the US defence establishment could create the impression of weakness among America’s rivals.

The Guardian reported that Panetta pointed to turmoil within the Pentagon, including the resignation of Army Secretary Dan Driscoll, as part of a wider concern about US military leadership.

The Pentagon has rejected suggestions that the department is unable to function effectively and maintains that the US military remains operational.

However, Panetta believes internal uncertainty could make an already difficult conflict harder to manage.

US-Israel-Iran War Latest Live News: What Options Does Donald Trump Have?

Panetta outlined three broad choices for President Donald Trump.

  1. The first would be to end the war and accept that the campaign had failed to achieve its objectives.
  2. The second would be to continue the current cycle of attacks and retaliation, effectively accepting a prolonged stalemate.
  3. The third would be to take much stronger action to control the Strait of Hormuz and remove Iran’s ability to disrupt one of the world’s most important shipping routes.

Each option carries significant risks.

Ending the war could expose Washington to criticism if Iran is seen as having resisted American demands. Continuing the conflict could produce a long and expensive war. A major attempt to seize control of the Strait could trigger a much wider regional confrontation.

US-Israel-Iran War Latest Live News: US Military Presence Could Extend Into 2027

The possibility of a prolonged conflict is also reflected in the US military’s regional posture.

A recent Wall Street Journal report said Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth has extended Middle East deployments into 2027, indicating that the Pentagon is preparing for a longer military presence in the region.

That development is significant because it contrasts with expectations that the conflict could be resolved quickly.

A longer deployment would also increase pressure on US troops, ships and military resources.

Panetta has warned that prolonged deployments and an unclear endgame could eventually create the conditions for another US “forever war”.

US-Israel-Iran War Latest Live News: What Happened to the June US-Iran Peace Agreement?

The latest escalation is particularly significant because Washington and Tehran had already reached a diplomatic framework in June.

The United States and Iran signed the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding with mediation from Pakistan and Qatar. The agreement was intended to stop military operations, restore navigation through the Strait of Hormuz and create a framework for further negotiations.

The initial agreement created hopes that the war could move toward a political settlement.

High-level talks followed in Switzerland, where negotiators discussed nuclear issues, sanctions, monitoring and mechanisms to prevent military misunderstandings.

But the agreement failed to produce a lasting end to the confrontation.

Both sides have since accused each other of failing to follow commitments, while military activity has once again intensified.

US-Israel-Iran War Latest Live News: Could the US-Iran War Really Last Until 2027?

Panetta’s six-month warning does not mean that the war will definitely continue until early 2027. It represents his assessment of the current political and military situation.

But several developments point toward a conflict that may not end quickly.

The US continues to maintain military pressure. Iran continues to resist. The Strait of Hormuz remains a major point of confrontation. Economic sanctions are hurting Iran but have not forced Tehran to accept Washington’s demands. At the same time, diplomatic efforts have failed to deliver a permanent settlement.

Recent events have reinforced those concerns. Iran has claimed attacks against US vessels, while Washington has denied some of Tehran’s claims and has responded militarily to attacks it says targeted American forces.
