US President Donald Trump has indicated that the ongoing Iran war may come to an end after the November 3 midterm elections, or potentially before then. Speaking to Fox News on Thursday, Trump was asked why the US had not launched a more extensive military campaign against Iran. Trump suggested that the upcoming elections could be one factor influencing Washington’s approach.
He said Iran was already in serious difficulty and claimed that US military action had significantly weakened the country’s missile capabilities.
Trump Claims Iran’s Missile Arsenal Has Been Weakened
Trump acknowledged that Iran still possesses missiles but claimed that a large part of its arsenal had been destroyed during the US attacks. According to Trump, Tehran had a substantial missile stockpile before the conflict, but its capabilities have now been severely reduced. He added that Iran would likely retain some missiles even after the military campaign.
The US President did not indicate that Washington was preparing to immediately escalate its operations into a full-scale offensive.
Trump Defends US Military Action Against Iran
Trump also defended his decision to launch military operations against Iran, saying he would follow the same course if faced with the situation again. He claimed that the strikes had eliminated Iran’s nuclear capability and argued that Tehran could otherwise have used a nuclear weapon against Israel, other countries in the Middle East and the United States.
Iran has continued to face pressure from the US amid the ongoing conflict, with Washington seeking to limit Tehran’s military capabilities.
Trump also dismissed a Wall Street Journal report suggesting that the Iran war could continue until the end of his presidential term. Rejecting that possibility, Trump said such an outcome was highly unlikely and indicated that he expected the conflict to conclude much sooner.
