US President Donald Trump has suggested that the United States could remain in Iran after the ongoing conflict and potentially take control of the country’s oil resources. Speaking during a visit to Ireland, Trump compared the possibility with Washington’s post-war involvement in Venezuela.

Trump said the US could eventually leave Iran, but added that Washington might choose to remain and “keep the oil like Venezuela”. His remarks indicate that oil access could become part of the discussion over what happens after the conflict.

When Could The Iran War End?

Trump said he expected the conflict to conclude around the time of the US midterm elections in November, although he left open the possibility of an earlier end. He also claimed that Iran had been repeatedly seeking a deal with Washington. However, Trump maintained that the US would agree to negotiations only if Tehran accepted terms that he considered favourable to the United States.

“We have to make the right deal,” Trump said, stressing that he would reject any agreement he regarded as inadequate.

Why Did Trump Mention Venezuela?

Trump’s comments referred to the US intervention in Venezuela, where American forces captured former President Nicolas Maduro in January and brought him to the US to face criminal charges. Following the operation, Washington moved to increase its involvement in Venezuela’s oil industry, including measures concerning the country’s crude exports and access to its substantial petroleum reserves.

Trump’s comparison suggests that he sees a possible parallel between the US role in Venezuela and what Washington could seek from Iran after the current conflict.

Iran War Pushes Oil Prices Higher

The comments came as the conflict continued to put pressure on global energy markets. Oil prices have climbed above $100 a barrel, while US diesel prices have also surged. Trump argued that energy prices would fall sharply once the fighting ends. He said US gasoline prices would “drop like a rock” after the conflict is brought to a close.

However, prolonged disruption around the region could continue to affect global supplies and energy costs.

What Did Trump Say About A Deal With Iran?

Trump said Iran had been “calling constantly” to pursue an agreement but indicated that Washington would not accept a settlement simply for the sake of ending the conflict. The president’s comments suggest that the US is seeking a deal that addresses its broader demands rather than a temporary arrangement to halt hostilities.

At the same time, his reference to retaining Iranian oil points to the possibility that economic and energy interests could play a major role in Washington’s post-war strategy.
