Strait of Hormuz continues to be important to the conflict due to the strategic role it plays in international shipments of energy resources. According to Vance, “the ability of Iran to effectively control this water route has become effectively gone” because of Iran’s loss of capabilities.

It is also mentioned that the oil and gas movements from the strait have been considerably restored in comparison with the beginning of the conflict. The remarks explain why strikes against commercial vessels are an acute issue for the war.

The near future looks equally unclear. When Vance says that “all options are on the table,” this implies that Washington may keep military as well as political pressure as an option. For Iran, the issue of commercial shipping and the Strait of Hormuz may become the key element in trying to restore diplomatic relations.

In general, for the region, strikes in Lebanon and accusations of civilian casualties indicate how easily the conflict may escalate. At least five people were killed during the disputed wedding celebration and there have been three arrests reported in southern Lebanon.
