Following several days of increasing tensions between Israel and Iran through military skirmishes, the two countries seem to be pulling back from the brink however, despite appearances, the tensions are still very real under the surface. All of this follows on the heels of the rescue of 24 Indian sailors who were stranded following an attack on their ship off the coast of Oman.

There was a diplomatic break through after US President Donald Trump encouraged both Israel and Iran to halt their actions subsequently, Iran declared its cessation of its military attacks on Israel, while information revealed that Israel halted their attacks on Iranian soil.

Iran issued a warning that any attack by Israel would result in an even harsher response especially if the attacks are carried out in Lebanon. Netanyahu said Israel still reserves its rights to protect itself from any attack made by the Iranians and this temporary ceasefire represents the first step towards a de-escalation process after weeks of tension in the Middle East.

There are indications of some level of restraint being practiced by both nations and yet violence still persists in Lebanon, with Israeli air strikes and Hezbollah attacks ensuring that the fight on the northern front is ongoing.

According to the ministry of health in Lebanon, more than 3,637 have died and over 11,000 others injured since March 2. Israel’s defence minister, Israel Katz, stated that “Beirut would be subject to additional bombardment if Hezbollah continued their attacks.”

It is a major relief for India, since all 24 Indian nationals who were aboard the Marivex, an oil tanker under the Palau flag and have been found safe after the fire and military operations in the Gulf of Oman.

According to US Central Command, a precise military strike incapacitated the ship because of its refusal to adhere to military orders while moving towards Iran. The latest development raises concerns about security in one of the world’s vital energy regions while india relies heavily on Gulf shipping routes for energy imports and trade activities, can take some solace from this recent development.

The financial markets have not responded cautiously to the cease-fire though Brent crude, which saw its price rise by more than 5% amid the latest escalation in the conflict, saw its gains cut back a little and it was still trading at high levels around the $95 mark per barrel.

Brent crude has seen its prices increase by roughly 31% over the last 100 days of the increased conflict, whereas US crude oil prices have gained approximately 37%. Gold prices held steady amid investor caution regarding renewed hopes of a ceasefire coupled with ongoing geo-political threats.
