US Israel Iran War Latest News: US President Donald Trump has announced that leaders from Israel and Lebanon are expected to hold talks for the first time in 34 years, marking a rare diplomatic development amid ongoing conflict. The announcement came on Wednesday, a day after representatives from both countries held uncommon direct discussions in Washington, DC, aimed at reducing tensions and ending Israeli attacks on Lebanon. Sharing the update on his platform, Trump wrote, “Trying to get a little breathing room between Israel and Lebanon.” He added, “It has been a long time since the two leaders have spoken, like 34 years. It will happen tomorrow. Nice!” However, he did not clarify which leaders would participate.

US Israel Iran War Latest News: How Conflict Escalated Between Israel and Lebanon

The situation intensified after Lebanon became involved in the broader conflict between the US, Israel, and Iran on March 2. This followed renewed attacks by Hezbollah, a group aligned with Iran. Hezbollah stated that its actions were in response to Israel’s killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei at the start of the war on February 28, as well as repeated violations of a ceasefire agreement reached in November 2024.

Israel-Lebanon Conflict: Humanitarian Impact and Military Developments

Since the conflict escalated, Israeli operations have reportedly resulted in over 2,000 deaths in Lebanon and forced more than 1.2 million people to leave their homes. Israeli forces have also launched a ground offensive in southern Lebanon, aiming to secure additional territory and establish what they describe as a “buffer zone.”

On the same day, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he had ordered an expansion of military operations in southern Lebanon towards the eastern region. He noted that Israel is continuing negotiations with the Lebanese government alongside its military actions, seeking to disarm Hezbollah and achieve a “sustainable peace.”

The Lebanese government, which is not directly involved in the fighting, has been calling for a ceasefire and the withdrawal of Israeli troops from its territory.

Israel initially aimed to control the area from the southern border up to the Litani River, about 30 kilometers north. However, this objective has not been fully achieved due to continued resistance from Hezbollah.

Displacement Crisis and Uncertain Future in Lebanon

Even if a ceasefire is reached soon, uncertainty remains for the 1.2 million displaced people in Lebanon. Many are unsure when or if they will be able to return home. Webb highlighted that large parts of southern Lebanon have been heavily damaged. “In some villages along the border, many homes have been blown up, while others across all of the south and in Beirut’s southern suburbs have been destroyed by Israel’s air strikes as well,” he added.

The planned talks, if they proceed, could mark a significant step toward easing tensions, though the situation on the ground remains highly volatile.
