Kuwait: Iran launched missile and drone attacks on Kuwait on Friday (July 17), targeting a major power and water desalination plant as well as several Kuwaiti Army facilities. The attacks have caused damage to key infrastructure and set fire to the desalination plant, injuring several Kuwaiti soldiers. According to officials from the country, Iranian missiles hit their targets, including the crucial power plant and the water desalination facility.

“The Ministry of Electricity, Water, and Renewable Energy stated that firefighters managed to extinguish the flames immediately,” a statement by the ministry added. “Repair teams are already working to mend the damaged power generating units.”

US-Israel-Iran War Latest News: Why Is the Desalination Plant Significant?

The desalination plant that was hit is one of Kuwait’s main sources of drinking water. Around 90% of the country’s drinking water comes from desalination, making these plants very important for people living in the country. Although officials have not reported any interruption in the water supply, the attack has raised concerns about the safety of important civilian infrastructure during the ongoing regional conflict.

What Did the Kuwaiti Army Say?

The Kuwaiti Army confirmed that hostile drones attacked several military camps and facilities. In an official statement, the military described the attack as “sinful Iranian aggression” and said several members of the Kuwaiti Land Force were injured while carrying out their duties. Officials have not revealed the exact number of injured soldiers or shared details about their condition.

How Does This Fit Into the Wider Regional Conflict?

The attacks happened shortly after reported US strikes on several locations in southern Iran, including Ahvaz, Bushehr, Bandar Abbas, Qeshm, Dashti, Bostan, Sirik, and Bandar-e Lengeh. According to Iranian media, the US strikes damaged bridges, transport routes, communication towers, airports, and industrial facilities. Reports also said more than 200 patients were moved from Baghaei Specialised Hospital in Ahvaz after the hospital became unusable following nearby strikes.

Our reported attacks on both Kuwait and Iran demonstrate how this conflict between the US, Israel, and Iran is spreading throughout the entire region, resulting in more military operations targeting vital infrastructure. This presents enormous challenges for regional security and stability.
