US-Israel-Iran War Latest News:  Almost 50,000 people have been displaced from their homes after the fast-paced advance of Houthi rebels in western Yemen, according to aid organizations. Whole villages are reported to be evacuated in the ongoing battle on the coast of the Red Sea, while some civilians are trapped in frontline areas and their food reserves are dwindling.

This new confrontation has put the civilians of Yemen, one of the poorest nations of the Middle East, at the heart of the regional power game involving control over an important international maritime route. The renewed battles have also brought concerns that the ongoing war in Yemen may develop into a protracted civil war.

US-Israel-Iran War Latest News: Why Are Thousands Of Yemenis Fleeing?

The Houthis – a rebel group backed by Iran – has achieved quick success in taking control of towns situated along the Red Sea coastline of Yemen during this week, displacing the US- and Saudi-backed Yemeni government from those towns.

The IOM, an agency of the United Nations, reported that around 46,000 people were displaced in the governorates of Taiz and Hodeidah. This figure raised the fears that the total displaced population could reach up to 50,000. Many people have been affected due to displacement more than once. They have to leave their towns for the second or even third time because of ongoing fighting.

Large numbers of civilians have been seen to be moving away from the affected regions, carrying their personal belongings. Important routes have been blocked due to the fighting, while telephone networks are inaccessible in certain locations.

“There is an urgent need for aid to be provided to the people who are being displaced,” stated Joe Lowry, IOM’s spokesperson on Middle East and north Africa based in Cairo According to humanitarian organizations, displaced civilians require emergency shelters, cash aid, food aid, clean drinking water, basic necessities, health and protective services.

“People are suffering because of the renewed fighting and bombing that is taking place at the front line, causing large scale displacement of civilians,” Lowry told reporters. “A significant number of civilians have been found to be carrying few personal belongings after moving out due to the bombing and fighting,” he added. “Humanitarian organizations are constantly assessing their ability to reach affected communities considering the security situation and territorial changes,” he continued.

US-Israel-Iran War Latest News: Why Is Mocha Port Important?

Among the most significant advances made in the current offensive by the Houthis is the occupation of the strategic port town of Mocha on the Red Sea coastline of Yemen. Mocha gained historical significance due to its connection with the international trade of coffee. It is also the origin of the term “mocha” which refers to coffee beverages and chocolate-based drinks.

The residents spoke of scenes of chaos and pandemonium when the Houthis attacked their town. One of the fleeing inhabitants, Mohamed, 46, stated that there was an “apocalyptic scene” in the town, as reported by Agence France-Presse.

Mujahid Tahami, another local resident, made his way to the government-controlled city of Aden. He indicated that “families have been subjected to looting by gangs as they flee”. Some people were able to flee the conflict zone using motorcycles, while others were not able to leave. The families have also reportedly been split up, with some members remaining behind in the affected zones.

US-Israel-Iran War Latest News: Why Are Houthis Targeting The Red Sea Coast?

The capture of territories by the Houthis is strategically significant since they have gained control of regions and islands located along the coast of Yemen along the Red Sea. The territorial gains by the movement could help it get into a more advantageous position in close proximity to Bab al-Mandab Strait, which is a vital strait separating the Red Sea from the Gulf of Aden and serves as a transport link between Europe and Asia.

Bab al-Mandab means gate of tears or gate of grief.  Although the strait was considered a tough one to navigate due to powerful currents and winds, it is not physically difficult for merchant ships to cross through it nowadays. The problem is the potential attempt by the Houthis to limit or completely block the traffic in the strategic bottleneck.

US-Israel-Iran War Latest News: Could Houthi Control Disrupt Global Shipping?

Bab al-Mandab being blocked can certainly have repercussions which go far beyond Yemen. In case commercial vessels cannot traverse this route, they will be forced to take the longer route via the southern tip of Africa. In this case, the distance traveled increases by several thousand nautical miles, resulting in additional time, higher fuel costs, and higher transportation costs.

Recent tensions have brought more instability to the oil market globally. Oil prices have risen above $100 per barrel, having traded at lower levels in the past few weeks. Therefore, the importance of Yemen’s Red Sea coast from a strategic standpoint is increasing due to uncertainties that exist in the Middle East due to ongoing hostilities.

US-Israel-Iran War Latest News: What Has The UN Said About The New Yemen Fighting?

This newest wave of violence has been termed the worst violence in Yemen since the UN-mediated peace initiatives in 2022. Hans Grundberg, the UN Special Envoy for Yemen, speaking at a UN Security Council emergency meeting on Yemen stated that Yemen was “entering a new and more dangerous phase of war.”

“This new war must concern us all,” Grundberg stated. UN envoy Grundberg further said that the recent outbreak of violence might signal the end of the relative period of calm in Yemen, which Yemen has been enjoying since four years now after the UN-sponsored truce.

“This marks the end of the relatively peaceful situation that Yemen has enjoyed for over four years since the UN-sponsored truce. Not only does this violence have the potential to drag Yemen into a prolonged and widening war, but there is also the danger of once again drawing Yemen into the wider regional dispute, with global consequences.”

US-Israel-Iran War Latest News: How Is The Wider Middle East Conflict Affecting Yemen?

The Yemen conflict has traditionally been shaped by the competition between the major regional powers such as Saudi Arabia, Iran and the UAE, whose rivalries have also fueled proxy wars and helped armed organizations bolster their power.

Moreover, the general confrontation between the US-Israel-Iran has introduced another dimension to the Middle Eastern politics. The Houthi movement in Yemen, which receives support from Iran, plays a crucial role in the broader regional security scenario because of its proximity to the Red Sea and Bab al-Mandab.

Hence, the recent territorial expansion of the Houthi organization might have implications outside the Yemen borders, especially when the situation poses a threat to international shipping and energy supplies

US-Israel-Iran War Latest News: How Serious Is Yemen’s Humanitarian Crisis?

The new displacement crisis is emerging amid an ongoing humanitarian crisis in Yemen. According to a recent UN humanitarian situation report, the nation, with a population of 40 million people, is experiencing an increasing malnutrition crisis. Almost half the population in the nation is suffering from acute food insecurity across the country.

“Conflict, economic decline, displacement, climate and regional events have increasingly eroded livelihoods and coping capacities,” said the report. “Meanwhile, reduced funding and operations are reducing the capacity of humanitarian actors to deliver assistance to the scale required.” The new clashes will add further strain to already overstretched humanitarian organizations and communities.

US-Israel-Iran War Latest News: What Are Displaced Yemenis Saying?

However, thousands of civilians who have managed to escape the ongoing battle have found temporary relief in the displacement camps. Most of them reached the camps with just a handful of possessions and do not know what is happening with their houses and families back in their places of residence.

Mohammed Khudairi who fled from the war to the displacement camp made up of huts with wooden and straw roofs told that the attacks were continuing and there were still people trapped in the war zone. “It is a catastrophe, and the attacks are continuing,” he said. “But we managed to escape from there, while others are trapped.”

It seems that the continued advancement of the Houthi forces, increased displacement and continued fighting may push Yemen towards a new full-scale and long-lasting war due to the strategic location of the Red Sea coast of the country.
