Houthi attacks against Saudi Arabia have ramped up recently, with an attack in the kingdom’s Najran province injuring 11 civilians. Today the Yemeni militant group reportedly attacked civilians. Now, Qatar has come out and expressed solidarity for its longstanding ally, Saudi Arabia.
In a boldly worded statement, the Qatari foreign ministry stated that it rejects the targeting of civilians and affirms its solidarity with measures being taken by Saudi Arabia in response to a Houthi attack on the kingdom’s southern Najran region.

Earlier today, Qatar signed a defence pact with Pakistan and Saudi Arabia. The pact called the ‘Mecca Joint Defence Agreement’ states that an attack against any of the 3 countries will be considered as an attack on the other two as well. It aims to boost military co-operation between all 3 countries. Now, the communications director of Turkey’s president Recep Tayyip Erdogan has stated the ‘‘Mecca Agreement, is not aimed at any particular country, will strengthen the shared security and collective deterrence”.

Yemen’s Iran backed militant group Houthis are drawing widespread condemnation for a recent strike in the Najran province of Saudi Arabia. And now, the Gulf Co-Operation Council (GCC) has also slammed them. GCC Secretary-General Jassim Mohammed Albudaiwi described the assault as an “act of terror that breaches both international and humanitarian law,” and said that Saudi Arabia has the backing of fellow members for any defence efforts.

Washington has maintained that it will oppose any deal which leaves Iran in control of the waterway.
