US-Israel-Iran War Latest News: The most recent standoff between the United States and Iran has caused further escalations in tension in the Middle East region, affecting not only regional stability but also the international economy. Official sources from Iran revealed that the United States’ airstrikes in the cities of Bandar Abbas and Bushehr claimed the lives of eight military personnel and becoming yet another step in the existing crisis. The new hostilities have had a direct effect on the economy, causing the price of oil to rise to over $80 per barrel.

US-Israel-Iran War Latest News: Military Escalation Raises Regional Risks

According to the Iranian regime, the attacks were made against strategic military sites in southern Iran in response to the U.S. allegation that Tehran was behind an attack on three ships close to the Strait of Hormuz. The U.S. is said to have carried out attacks on over 80 military related targets as part of an effort to defend international shipping from threats. Iran, however, has promised to safeguard the interests of its nation, meaning there could still be retaliation.

“Following the criminal aggression carried out this morning by the US terrorist army against areas in southern Iran, eight courageous members of the air and naval forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran’s military in Bandar Abbas (south) and Bushehr (southwest) fell as martyrs,” state television said, citing a statement from the military as per AFP.

US-Israel-Iran War Latest News: Why the Strait of Hormuz Matters

The Strait of Hormuz continues to be one of the world’s most vital passages nearly 20% of all the oil supply in the world passes through this strategic channel on a daily basis and therefore with any military operation taking place in this zone is considered a threat to the energy market. Recent attacks on commercial ships have raised fears of disruption of sea passages once again.

US-Israel-Iran War Latest News: Oil Prices & Markets Under Pressure

Financial markets acted quickly on the new developments as the price of Brent crude shot up by almost 8% to stand at $80.12 per barrel, with WTI gaining 7.7% to trade at $75.83 per barrel. Global stock markets fell in value as well due to investor preferences moving to safer assets amidst all the uncertainty and higher oil prices may cause an inflationary situation for economies which already have high interest rates and slow growth.

“I think anything that happens is going to be over very quickly and will only make it safer, including for oil… Anything that happens is going to happen very fast. We’re not looking for long-term,” he said at the end of a two-day NATO summit in Ankara.

US-Israel-Iran War Latest News: Diplomacy Still Holds the Key

Despite the claim by US President Donald Trump that the ceasefire with Iran had become ineffective, he implied that the current standoff might end sooner than expected while his statements did little to reassure the markets, lack of an official US statement on the attacks leaves a lot of doubts unclarified.

It remains to be seen in the next few days whether diplomatic moves will succeed in avoiding further military actions while in any case, the ongoing crisis is another proof of how easily the instability in the region may impact the world.
