US Israel Iran War Latest Update: Israel and Lebanon announced on Wednesday that they have agreed to implement a ceasefire following negotiations in Washington aimed at ending the conflict that escalated alongside the recent war involving Iran. A joint statement released with the United States said the ceasefire will take effect only if the Iran-backed Hezbollah group completely stops its attacks and withdraws all of its fighters from the South Litani Sector.
Israel-Lebanon Ceasefire Conditions: Hezbollah Withdrawal and End of Hostilities
The agreement outlines strict conditions for maintaining peace along the border. Hezbollah must fully cease military operations and remove its operatives from southern Lebanon’s South Litani Sector.
The statement noted, “The two sides agreed with the guidance of the United States to swiftly advance the creation of pilot zones in which the Lebanese Armed Forces will take exclusive control of the territory to the exclusion of all non-state actors.”
Under the plan, selected pilot zones will be established where only the Lebanese Armed Forces will be allowed to operate, ensuring that no armed non-state groups remain active in those areas.
Lebanese Army to Take Full Control of Designated Areas
As part of the ceasefire framework, Lebanon’s military will assume exclusive security control in designated regions. The move is intended to strengthen state authority and reduce the presence of armed groups near the Israeli border. Officials believe the arrangement could help stabilize the region and prevent future clashes.
Israel-Lebanon Border Violence Continued Despite Previous Talk
The latest agreement follows earlier ceasefire efforts that failed to completely halt violence. Israel and Lebanon had agreed to a cessation of hostilities in April, and the arrangement was extended in May. However, military exchanges continued.
On Wednesday, Lebanese security sources said Israeli drone strikes killed at least six people in southern Lebanon and also targeted a vehicle south of Beirut. Israel, meanwhile, reported intercepting a hostile aircraft that was likely launched by Hezbollah.
US-Brokered Deal Helped Ease Israel-Lebanon Tensions
A separate US-mediated understanding announced on Monday played a key role in reducing tensions between the two sides. Under that arrangement, Israel backed away from plans to strike Hezbollah-controlled southern suburbs of Beirut, while Hezbollah suspended cross-border attacks into Israeli territory. The development created momentum for broader ceasefire negotiations and helped pave the way for Wednesday’s agreement.
How the Israel-Hezbollah Conflict Escalated
The conflict intensified after Israel launched a military operation in Lebanon in March targeting Hezbollah positions. The group had been carrying out attacks across the border in support of Tehran. The fighting became increasingly linked to the wider regional conflict involving Iran, raising concerns about a broader Middle East escalation.
Iran’s Role in the Ceasefire Negotiations
Iran previously stated that it would not support any agreement aimed at ending the conflict involving the United States and Israel, which began in late February, unless Lebanon was included in the ceasefire framework. This position made the Israel-Lebanon front a critical part of regional diplomatic efforts.
Israel and Lebanon to Hold More Talks in June
Both countries have also agreed to continue direct negotiations to address unresolved political and security issues.
According to the joint statement, Israeli and Lebanese representatives will meet again during the week of June 22. The discussions will focus on confidence-building measures and efforts to reach a broader, long-term agreement.
What the Israel-Lebanon Ceasefire Means for Regional Stability
The latest ceasefire agreement is being seen as a significant diplomatic breakthrough. If fully implemented, it could reduce tensions along the Israel-Lebanon border, strengthen security arrangements in southern Lebanon, and lower the risk of a wider regional conflict involving Iran and its allies. The coming weeks, particularly the planned June negotiations, are expected to determine whether the ceasefire can evolve into a lasting peace arrangement.
