US Israel Iran War: Iran's new Supreme Leader is Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of Ali Khamenei, the country's previous leader. Just over a week has passed since his father was killed in coordinated US-Israeli strikes that have increased tensions in the region.
With a resounding majority, the Assembly of Experts, a group of 88 senior clerics tasked with selecting the nation's leader, approved Mojtaba's choice. "The Assembly of Experts appointed Ayatollah Seyyed Mojtaba Hosseini Khamenei as the third Leader of the sacred system of the Islamic Republic of Iran by a decisive vote," the assembly declared.

Mojtaba Khamenei, the second-oldest of Ali Khamenei's six children, was born in Mashhad, Iran, on September 8, 1969. He has mostly avoided the spotlight, concentrating on his activities behind Iran's political and security apparatus.
According to reports, his father and wife, Zahra Haddad-Adel, perished in the same hit. During one of the most difficult times in Iran's history, Mojtaba has emerged as the key player in the country's leadership structure.
Mojtaba, who is 56 years old, has the religious title of Hujjat al-Islam, which is lower than Ayatollah in Shia Islam. He has maintained tight relationships with political and military leaders and developed significant influence among Iran's security forces, especially the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), over the years. Even before he formally assumed the position of Supreme Leader, his influence and familial ties made him a significant power broker in Tehran.
According to reports, Mojtaba Khamenei is incredibly wealthy, owning luxurious homes, hotels, real estate, and companies overseas. His estimated net worth is $138 million, or about ₹1,273.33 crore (12.73 billion Indian Rupees). Because a large portion of his wealth is held indirectly through businesses and investments that are not directly in his name, precise assessments are challenging.
The prolonged conflict and growing hostilities with the US and Israel coincide with Mojtaba's ascent. The selection shows that Iran's political and military strategy is still firmly under the grip of hardliners. Despite international pressure and warnings, analysts predict that his leadership would likely maintain Tehran's current course.
While both the US and Israel have stated that Iran's senior leaders continue to be high-priority targets, the Assembly of Experts' swift decision highlights the necessity of steady leadership in the midst of crisis.
